POEM FOR THE DAY
By LOUIS ALBERT BANKS
DON'T ALLOW YOURSELF TO RUST
"The cv.i and gen-'r;:l antidote imainst i'orrow is eini'loynit'r.t. Sor
row is u kind ot i list iu the soul, which every now idea contributes in
its passage to scour away." Dr. Johnson.
I'd rather be abused and cussed
Than let my life grow dirji with rust
In idleness we're soon mildewed
And much inclined to saclly brood.
I'd have my soul a channel clean
And would provide a constant "dreen",
That there should be no stagnant waste
Becoming bitter to my taste.
An ncllve mind can never mope -"lis
waslted and scoured with constant hope.
I" resh thinking gives an fttmospheve . ;
. Which keeps the-soul ia iJiUiqucriug gca.. " -
But if vc stew in dire djjjgust,
Merc prejudice will form; a crust
Through which no blood-of life can surge.
And we shall lose all buoyant ur;;e.
No man is meant to g touch or yloom.
Or think himself a child of doom,
T o give himself to black despair.
And grieve because his life is bare.
For he who fights against his fate
Soon finds his nerves alive, clale;
And through his -excrciiie alone
Mis lungs will breathe a rare ozone.
God helps the man who helps himself
Who is no idler on life's shelf;
Who quick responds to every chance
To breathe the air of rich romance.
A grief will often lead the way
To brilliant scenes of glorious day;
It only needs that we shall seize
On every brave adventurous breeze-
