CREATE INTEREST
BAN DON, Aug. 6. The commer
cial fishing boats have been very
act Wo the past lew weeks catch
ing many pounds ol salmon every
day. The weather has been calm
enough to make the bar and sea
smooth enough to warrant deep
.-.ea fishing,
Silverside, and chinook -salmon
are quite plentiful this year and
the boats are almost on a competi
tive scale, eacn trying to make a
bigger haul titan the other fellow.
It is a beautiful sight around dusk
to see eight or ten small crafts all
making a gallant attempt to be the
first to the dock to unload the
catch for the day. Many of the
boats stay at sea for two or three
days before coming in to empty
the fish. A great many of the
boats are. very neat little crafts
especially debignert for fishing and
painted in brilliant appropriate
hues.
Chinook salmon are more choice
than silverside so when a boat has
many chinook on board It is a
much more profitable day for the
owner. The fish are always packed
in ice In the hold nf the boat to
preserve them if the pilot decides
to stay out over night or longer.-
As soon as the fish are all
weighed they are immediately
packed In small boxes with ice
and shipped away to be distributed
all over the country.
The fishing industry here holds
a great lnlerest to tourists who
are always on hand in the evening
to witness the maneuvers .at the
dock and also on the bar. The
smaller fishintr boats have a busy
time making their way across the
bar without mishap. Any little
thrill of this sort is greeted with
Interest by the standers-by.
