crew no longer feared hi in. Kalth

ly tries to discredit Noll before
Faith. In a quarrel Noll kicks out
the eye of Mauser, a member of
the crew. Thereafter, he tear's
Mauger's vengeance. When the
Sally Sims puts into a lonely is
land, Faith goes ashore. She meets
an ex-sailor named Brainier, w ho
toes with her to join Noll'a crew
Dan'l takes an Instant dislike to
him. l-'alih'B brother,. I toy, also
resents lirander.

CHAPTKR XV.

cabin one day, saw Dan'l Tobey
slrike a man. He saw this at the
moment his head rose above the
companion. Dan! and the man
were amidships, and Dan'l cuffed
him and drove him forward.
Dan'l was not given to blows;
he seldom needed to use them. So
Hoy was curious. He went for
ward along the deck, touched
Dnn'l's elbow, pointed after the
cuffed man and asked huskily:
"What's the matter? What did
that fellow do?"
Dan'l had not seen Roy comfii-.

Now, a whaler, when she Is do

punished with the utmost rigor.
Hoy knew this as well as Dan'l
nnd Dan'l knew that Roy knew.
Rov grinned youthfully.
"Oh, ' say, what's the secret
about?" he protested. "What did
he do?" .
Dan'l smiled In a way that ad
mitted his mlftstatemcnt; he shook
his head.
"Nothing," he said.
Hoy looked angry.
"Keep It to yourstdf. If you won'
to!" The hov .had known Dan'l
Tobey all his life, nnd had no awe
of hint. "Don't tell me If you don't
want to. If It's a secret, I guess I

ing at Hrander's story of why Faith
brought him aboard the ship here."
Hoy's cheeks began to burn.
"Hiander! What did brander
say ?"
Dan'l shook his head.
'1 don't know. 1 didn't hear. He
wasn't hero at the time. Probably
he didn't really Bay anything. Prob
ably the men in si made it up. The
fo'c's'le is a dirty place, you know,
Hoy. Jjirty men, and dirty talk "

"1 don't know that he said any
thing." Dan'l Insisted. "Probably
not. I just heard this man snicker
ing, and telling two others some
thing. I heard him name Itrander
and your sister; so I struck In.'
The otJiers were just Listening.
They got out of the way. I asked
(his man what he said ; and he ,
wouldn't tell me, so 1 hit hfm a
clip and told him to keep his
tongue stilt."
Hoy whirled to look forward.1
The deck was ull but empty, but
Hiander and another man were
by the Unlghtheads, talking cas
ually together. Hoy7 said under
his breath
"I'm going lo "
"Wait!"
Hoy shook loose.
"No! This Is my family affair,
Dnn'l. Let mu alone!"
He started quickly forward.
Dnn'l hesitated; then hedrewback,
turned aft, stopped, watched. He
took a malicious pleasure In seeing
what would happen.
Hrander had Keen Hoy coming;
he was watching the hoy, and
smiling a little. The other man's
back was turned. Hoy strode for
ward, head up. eyes blazing. He
kept on till he was face to face
with Hrander He stopped, and
his hands trembled.
"You, iirander!" he said thickly.
"You keep your tongue off my "
Itrander moved like a flash of
light. He drew Hoy to him, swung
the boy around, pinned his arms
with one of his own, bent him
over the rail, and clapped hia
hand over Hoys mouth. After- a
short struggle he lifted the boy
easily and carried him, thus pinned
and gagged, aft as tar as the try

view. III., and C. E. Anderton
whose address Is unknown, were
burned to death this afternoon
when their biplane crasneel into a
marsh in East Madison as they
were taking off for La Crosse.
