the local machine gun company,

success. There was not the slight
est sign of lagging Interest and
every mem her there did his part.

and Douglas county we would have
a .company that all could well Uf
pioud of. '
There seems to bo a friendship
among the officers and members
of the company. A real friendship,
comradsllip, respect and obedience,
all blended into one massed under
si anding something 1 ha o never
obsei ved before in any organiza
tion of its kind. The absence of
harsh commands was another out
standing and pleasing feature of
the drill. Sharp siaccato com;
mands tire necessary lor the execu
tion of maneuvers, but not neces
sarily harsh.
The officers are highly efflcent
and are admired by the members
of the company lor those quali
ties. After drill n lunch was served
by the kitchen crew, and those
boys "knew their stuff." Several
persons responded with short
speeches and the orchestra did it
sell' proud.
We are with you, buddies, to the
last ditch. Keep your minds clean,
your hearts strong, your bodies
healthy, and the training wilt do
the rust.

MODERN research is doing
much to siiow us tho mysteri
ous working; of the human body.
A great deal of this work relates
to matters having a direct bear
ing on the life aud health of the
race.
New knowledge of the vitamins
I.-s qiade clear that tiny traces
ot these specific chemical sub
stances are essential to health.
Their absence may cause Illness
or even death for living creatures.
For long it lias been known that
certain minerals are present In ihn
organs of tiie body. Here they
work In mysterious ways. Recent
investigations are bringing new
light on this interesting subject.
Two eminent French scientists,
P. Jtutoit and Christian Zblnden,
recently made a report to the Aca
demy of Science, in Paris. These
men contend tiiat the human heart
contains not only copper and alu
minum, but also a little silver.
The lungs contain probably alt ol'
lhe body's supply of the rare
metal called titanium. The brain
Is said to be particularly rich in
tin. The pancreas, that gland
which produces insulin and makes
possible our eating of .sugar, car
ries considerable quantities of co
balt aud nickel.
These interesting conclusions
were made possible by the use of
an extremely delicate Instrument,
the spectroscope. Uy Its use these
metallic substance were lound to
be present in the ashes from half
a' hundred or more human or
gans. Just what are the duties of these
metallic elements In the Intricate
mechanisms of the body? That is
the problem now before the scien
tists. Physicists have found that the
atoms of each element emit def
inite wave lengths of light or ul
traviolet rays. This happens when
ever these atoms are highly heat
ed or electrified. Such rays are
seated out by the spectioscope and
permit the atoms actually to be
photographed.
We all know how Important Iron
is and how necessary it is that it
should be found In the blond. The
"hemoglobin" or red coloring mat
ter, which is everywhere present
in the body, is an iron compound.
Witli the exception of Iron, the
most wide-spread metals in the hu
man organs are copper and sliver.
They are found not only in the
heart, but also In the kidneys,
spleen, liver and In Ihe majority
of the glands of the body.
Tin was found, not only In the
brain, hut In the spleen and in the
thyroid gland of Ijie neck, that
gland which so often becomes dis
eased and the sat of goitre. The
thryoid gland seems to be, a catch
all for these tiny metallic elements
