Advertising Campaign Put
on by State Chamber
of Commerce Gets
Good Response.
In lla report of results for the
first four months of (he adver

under the Oregon sfuie. chnitiber
of commerce with the B2',')H'-t fund
itppropriuted hy the last lej;lslii

quiries Jiave been received; the
total cost for tin-no iiirjufrinH has
been approximately St si 5. Includ
ing February advertising for which
returns an; still coming In, an
average of 2S cents per Inquiry.
"TIiIb result rocs to show,"
states Mr. Kirkjuurick, "that the
world at large 1ms ft potential In
terest in Oregon and will respond
to persuasive advertising. The av
alanche of inquiries is unusual a.
this extremely small pro rata
eost. However, the most, remark
able feature about It Is that these'
Inquiries are derived from classi
fied advertisements placed under
land settlement and farm oppor
tunity headings. Therefore It can
be construed and the tenor of the
Inquiries prove that they are from
propspectlve farm settlers and not
from school children and curl
osity seekers who make up a larye
portion of (ho senders of coupons
for beautiful bnoklels. In our sur
vey of the records at the office
of the State Chamber we find that
the inquiries from these humble
classified advertisements slitte
that these prospective farm scl
tlers In Oregon are seeking a
change of locality, of clmate, of
conditions, of this, that and the
other thing, and that they are sus
ceptible to Oregon's fine oppor
tunities. Or the Iti.KCri Inquiries re
ceived In these four months, defi
nite committments have been
ii'Ado by the heads of filifi families
who stato they are coming to Ore
gon and tlmt their resources as
green ( p S!i,2 1 S.7rt), or approximate
ly $4000 per ramily, Of these In
quiries 12,f!K0 have been received
nt the Port html ofNco of the stale
chamber: approximately 4100 at
the Los Angeles office.
This advertising Is being In
sorted In the classified columns
nf HI farm publications, and the
Sunday editions of 20 newspapers,
the majority of these being In the
middle west, n few In California
nnd the southwest. A supplemen
tary campaign of display adver
tising is now being slatted In Cul
Ifqrulu to attract attention of the
great volume of visitors In that
section at this time of year, lie
suits to date show 80 per , cent
of Inquiries com in ; from the Miss
issippi Valley: lii per cent from
California land, the balance scat
tered." Booklet Follows Up
The follow-up system of the
state chamber after these inquir
ies are received Is very complete.
A fit-page Illustrated booklet do
ner! ptlvo of Oregon's agricultural
opportunities Is sent out together
with a questionnaire asking for
such Information as would give the
ch.'imber a complete picture of the
prospective settler's needs; his ex
petience, his resources and the
extent of Investment desired. A
letter also accompanies the booklet.
This expresses the chamber's per
sonal Interest In the Inquirer and
sniM-ests that It will do evervthin
within Its power to properly lo
cate a new pettier. Other letters
follow nt regular intervals If def
inite Information Is not forthcom
ing from the prospect. Should he
advise tluil his Interest Is in Home
specific branch of farming, such
as poultry raising. Irrigated fann
ing, diversified farming dairying
or fruit rafsng n complete pamph

Industry Is sent In him. Kah
prospect becomes a Houree of addi
tional prospects, for on the back
of the questionnaire are blanks
suETgcstitu' the filling in of name!
ami addresses of friends or rela

formation fin (): gu.
When the prospective settler
bus determined what vvt of the
State he Is !mett Interested In, the

WASHINGTON, March 21
The treasury announced today that
income wx reports as of March
were, $70 6.",S;7.-11, bringing the
total no far this month to 381,
S',:t.i0 20
This total for the month com
pared with $:7y.9M,5:il.7X for the
corresponding period a. year ago.
Today's figure showed a falling
off in comparison with the total
receipts for March 19, 1!29, which
exceeded 100,000,000. This de
crease was expected in view of the
speeding up of the bulk of collec
