State College Heads Plan

Marketing, More
Patronage.
t
A special demonstration
one of the must popular and spec
tacular methods of emphasizing
any agricultural project, is an
nounced for Oregon by the S. P.
f and S. railroad and Oregon Statu
college as another means of assist
ing the present Oregon dairy indus
try through economical production,
more efticient marketing uud In
creased consumption.
Plans for the train have been ap
proved by W. P. Turner, president
of the railroad, and W. J. Kerr,
the dairy industry out of Us pres
ent depression.
The extension service of the col
lege has been given a free hand in
the arrangement of exhibits ami
program lor the special, and P. M.
Braudl and N. C. Jamison of the
dairy department are planning to
present m graphic form the pro
groin of the state dairy convention
land producers' associations of this
state.
The train, probably an eight-car
special, will start Its state tour at
Eugene and will traverse the lines
of the Oregon Electric to Portland
and Forest Grove, the S. P. & S. to
Astoria and the Oregon Trunk
through central Oregon to Bend.
W. A. Schoenfeld, regional, repre
sentative ot the farm board, has of
fered the service of his orguniza-
train.jtiou in making the special a suc
cess from the marketing stand
point. Interest in this angie is high
now because of the movement to
unify Uie cooperative dairy groups
ot the state. -
Local arrangements In the com
munities along the -route are being
made by Kenneth Miller, agricul
tural agent of the railroad, who
says he is ready to assist local
communities in making the visit of
the train a major event of the year.
Requests for a place on the train
president of O. S. C, as another , schedule may be made through the
means of carrying out the present 1 county agents or through the rail
nationwide program designed to litt road representatives.

A Story of Romance
and High Adventure in
Life of Modern Days.

CHAPTER 8
A door at the end ot the dark
passage closed on Tom Burns.
William Bryce brushed his hands,
i A little Dink rose in his buttonhole
I dropped downward. He straight
ened it. With a backward jerk o
his head, he motioned Guy to the
inner office.
It was in wild disorder. Two
chairs were overturned. Pictures
' ou the wall were crooked.
On the table, papers were scat
tered. The lukstand toppled on its
Bide. A stream of ink trickled over
the polished walnut.
From tiie contusion, Bryce
reached over and picked out a
photograph. He set it carefully on
the top of the filing cabinet, first
wiping off a smudge of black.
It was a plc.ure of a young man
in a pilot's coitunie. There was a
Ion panel of the same young avi
ator on the wall. Pictures of Wil-
! Hum Uryce. Junior, at whose pas-
sionate insistence this factory had
s "Who kept my son from death?
f That fellow's dangerous."
' "Yes," said Guy, feeling his way,
t "it -might be wiser"
i "What! Buy him off? Let him
come in here and scream orders to
nie "
William Bryce was a powerfully
1 built man, quick, energetic. From
; his stubby, businesslike moustache
to his square, nervous hands he
was alive and bristling.
He now stood at a big. flat-
lopped desk and rapped with his
knuckles.
i "Do you know that he came in
here and calmly demanded 51,500?
i Actually expected me to hand It
4 over without a word? Wanted the
' check then and there. As though
I'm responsible for bis kid's health!
1 How am I Involved?"
"Did he want the money as a
' loan?"
: "Loan! He's drawn J7D0 beyond
! his wages right now. Loan! See
' that he takes all his stuff and
f clears out today! Give orders
'. that he's not to be allowed near
the plant."
PUTS EFFICIENCY
II
After many years of experimenta
tion in the construction of farm
machinery, manufacturers are now
building a very valuable piece of
equipment, known as the offset
harrow, according to George Hall,
representative lor Mltchel, Lewis
and Slaver company. This harrow
receives its name because of the pe
culiar manner in which it is attach
ed to tiie tractor.
There are many makes offered'
and purchase of one of these offset
harrows, reliably manufactured, is
an excellent Investment, because in
the present day necessity for abso
lute economy in production, the
purchase of suitable machinery is
a real investment.
The offset harrow is a toot which
fits every need, whether it be
turning cover crops for fertilizer,
leveling furrows, weed killing, gen
eral field work or close work to
the trees of the orchard. The off
set harrow does each and every one
of these jobs in an efficient man
ner and with a great saving in
time. Farmers and orchardists
should interest themselves in this
new and different tool which does
five or six jobs with real economy,
Mr. Hall says.
MITH'K TO CHICDlTOHS
! Guy returned to the workroom.
The emptiness gave him a tease,
strained feeling a sense ot un
easy apprehension.
Two weeks passed. Toward clos
ing time one Thursday, William
'Bryce rang.
"Where are the Miller specifica-
tions?"
"Miller specifications?"
"Yes yes! That's what I said,
i I gave them to Hums that after
? noon. He was to have delivered
v them."
"I never saw them. He didn t
leave them around."
Uryce banged with his knuckles,
j He Kioked quizzically across to
I Guy.'
'S "Wonder if you could get them?
.! They're no good to Hums."
A row of smalt, gray cottages,
1 each with rive wooden steps lead
i ing to the door and each with a
dustv six-foot patch of front gar
i den.
In one of these lived Tom Burns.
5 His uardeu was a yellow marguer
i ite bush.
! r.uv ran?. Footsteps clattered on
bare hoards. A woman with wispy
i vellovv hair and a frightened look
in ilio eves anKwereu.
Ohyou're Mr. Klliott irnm hip
I the newspaper wrapping. But he
led the way to a small back porch
where the washtubs were and
where a child's crib was crowded
into one corner.
A boy about six with gray, bril
liant eyes and dark, reddish-bluu
lips, lay there propped with pil
lows. He was very pinched about
the nostrils very white.
But he gave an excited laugh '
and reached out eager wasted ;
hands as his father said, "Look, 1
Tommy! Something for you." j
Burns stood and plumped up the ,
pillows. Guy perceived that he was
crying.
He culled his wife, showed her
how to fly the ship and followed
Guy to the door.
"I can't get a job. I've only
worked three days in the last
week.. If this keeps on "
He flung his head back with a
jerk. From the back porch came,
the sound of high rapid laughter.
Burns listened. '1 hen he said in a
kind of daze and as if talking to
himself:
"He could be cured. Gaynor's
child was cured. But it took money.
They had relatives. Good God a
child can be left to die because
people hold onto money. They
think it's none of their business.
But it is. I tell you, it's every
body's business!
"You well-fed ones think it s
none of your business. You think
you can build a wall around your
selves and prevent the evils that
you stand for from touching you.
You can't!
Good God! That fellow .could
save him. And he won't."
His wife came out and laid a
soothing hand on his arm. "Tom
be quiet. You worry the child.
He brushed her hand off. His
face had become livid but he said
with that peculiar expectant look:
I thought Bryce was sending
me a message, i tnougiu ne was
sending me money. He's not going
to do it ... ."
He opened the door. ltnoui
bidding good-bye, without any fur
ther word, he went ahead ot Guy
down the steps and down the
street.
Guv stuck the specifications in
his pocket. He watched Burns
flinging down the street anu again
that uneasy apprehension pos
sessed hint.
He was responsible the whole
world was responsible because
Tom Burns' child was left to die.
Slowly he started the car. was
there more than mere rant in the
words? And every wrong permit
ted is the fault of all? And are all
made to pay?
He shook off the oppressive
thought. What concern was I om
Burns to him and to the prett;.
girl standing now on a hill-top
waiting? How could his life ailed
theirs?
He would he late. Mis ; T'at
would stamp her foot and guily de
mand "Why?" He turned ins car
in the direction of the San Mateo
hills and went flying along forty
miles and more. Get swiftly from
the ache and pain ... get up
there in the twilight in the flowers.

( TpLINOR SMITH, daring 18-ycar old aviatrix, in a sensational
new altitude record for women at Roosevelt Field, N. Y.
on March 10th! George W. Haldcman In a new altitude rec
ord for commercial planes at Wilmington, Del., on Fchruary
28th! Two world's records within two weeks for Richfield
motor products I !
Miss Smith climbed to an altitude of between 30,000 and 32,000
feet in her Wright-motored Bellanca monoplane fighting faint
ncss due to failure of oxygen supply shattering the old record for
women by more than 6,000 feet. She used Richfield Gasoline,
Richlubc Motor Oil and Richluhc Rocker Arm Grease and paid
a high tribute to these products at the conclusion of the flight:
"Richfield Gasoline und Richlubc Motor Oil functioned perfect
ly in ny recorci-lrcaltng atilude flight. I always use Richfield
products because all tests have proved them to be the best, on
the around and in the air. No little share in my success ii due
to tiicm."
In establishing a new world's alti

Haldcman broke the old record
of Martin Jensen by nearly 8,000
feet. Haldcman, too, relied on
Richfield to carry bis Wright

a new world's record.
Use Richfield products for your

world's great pilots use them ex
