that the closed bass fishing season,
between April 15 and July 1, is
nothing more than adequate insur
ance for Oregon's future supply of
that species of game fish.
During the monjhs of May, June
and July, when the annual high
water floods the lowlands, the bass
seek the sedges and banks for their
spawning beds.
At this time, he said, when they
are engaged in guarding their eggs
and their young for a short period
after the hatch has taken place,
they are particularly voracious and
vicious.
The measure was adopted at the
last session of the game commis
sion when Ryckman suggested that
such a season be enforced.

capturing first prize for fibre flax.
Acreage in 1930 is about 7,500 with

then dried, run ih.ough machines

trom the fibre. It is next scutched
which separates the fibre from the
wooiiy parts. It Is now baled lor
the spinning mill. The Oregon state
penitentiary has a complete flax
and llnou producing plant. The
Miles Liuen Mills is another Salem,
Oregon, concern making liuen prod
ucts, especially fishermen's twine
which is highly regarded through
out the industry. Flax seed is an
Important by-product as Oregon
imports largo amounts lor making
linseed products. Oregon farmers
can contract with the state of Ore
gou for the salo of their fibre flux
betoru it is grown. During 1929 (he
state paid $40 per ton lor flax over
30 inches in length; $35 a ton for
flax 30 to 30 inches iu length and
corresponding prices for shorter
lengths. Cash is paid ou delivery.
