CHAPTER 40.
Mr. Crlsswell woke from Ills
slumber in the library, the papers
that Malvey Cr.il,-; had brought
from downtown in his tap.
"Where was the young chap?
He rang lor the butler, hho said,
unctlously: "The gentleman went
out in the grounds with Misa
Denlse and the Countess. Shall I
give him a message, sir?"
"No. They'll be back presently."
Mr. C'ri.sswell smiled indulgently
his own thoughts. "Let him
krow , want ,Q gL,e hjm yvhvn hc
cues come in.'
"Very good, sir."
Alone , again, the Spring sun
shine shiniug athwart the fine old
room made Mr. Crlsswell think of
his own youth. It seemed quite
close just now . . . happy days
when he had been poor and strug
gling and ambitious . . . deter
mined to garner dollars to help
his mother, who was again, left a
widow, and the little laughing
fairy of a -half-sister who, years
afterward, had married and given
birth to her own replica in Denlse.
A sood marriage for this little
ward of his ... it would he the
making of the girl!
By "good" his mind was not on
wealth, hut on the common de
nominator of all successful unions,
which Is lole and happiness.
There were not too many de
cent, square, hard-working fellows
to be found, these days. Van
Tuyl . . . Mortimer . . . the sons
of most of his "successful" com
petitors were too pleasure-loving,
lazy, unambitious, when they
weren't worse , . .
Young Craig was clever and re
liable, and, at the same time
(which was tm port ant to a worn
an) a most personable youl h. Deni
se and he made a handsome pair.
And from the worldly point of
view since Craig was in his of
fice and giving exceptional satis
faction It wouldn't be too bad a
match . . .
He'd see to that, of course. Rap
id promotion would he justified.
- Now, at this moment, he heard
Denlse's laughter and quieter mas
culine (ones.
He opened the library door to
greet them. "I hope I haven't
stayed too long, sir," apologized
young Craig.
"Natalie was making a movie or
us down in the little coppice. Il'.'i
sum to he a wow !" Denlse ex
claimed.
The old man smiled indulgent
ly. "We shall have to have a pri

finished." Then, collecting the pa

the young man. "Tuke care of

"I'll see to that," chirruped his '
niece. In great good fettle. "I'm
personally conducting him back
lo town
"Not in the ioud.-;ter?" llerunc'e
raised his brows with a sort of
mock-alarm humor. Then, to Mul
vey: "This little girl Is what they
call a speed-fiend. I can't entrust
these documents to her tender
mercies, not to speak of the safe
ty of one of my most promising
employes. No. my dear child, let
the chauffeur take you in the
limousine back to t he city."
"Calm yourself, ducky." She
planted an airy kiss on the top of
his bald pate. "We're goln.? with
Natalie."
When the Countess and the
young fallow had bidden adieu x to
Mr. Crlsswell, she lingered behind
for a moment, half curious about
and ntixlous for the old man's ap
proval , . ,
"You didn't mind me taking him
out Inlo the garden, did you, un
cle?" Now Mr. Crlsswell hud noticed
young Craig's ruffled, embar
rassed appearance. This was due
to Denises realistic rendering of
a"!! emotional nymph In the arms
of her lover. But how was Mr.
Crisswell to know that? Didn't the
perlu rhat ion indicate that ( Tuig
was attracted to this very pretty
maiden? thought her fond uncle.
"You sly little puss, vamping
one of my most useful young
men!" He shook a waggish finger
at her, smiling Indulgently. "No,
I'm not angry. But you're not to
carry him off his feet and break
his heart and ruin him for the Job
if you don't mean 'business."
Denlse looked coy, and mur
mured: "I like hliu Immensely."
Oh! -things were shaping jusl
the way she wanted Ihein. It
a great feather in her cap to get
uncle's approval.
"Now don't keep him 'waiting
when he's got to get back to the
office." f
"And I've my hospital commit
tee meeting, too," she supplement
ed. (Oh, foster tly good impres
