lory of the Glemlale Telephon
company. At (he time of his mar
riage Mr. Smith was owner and
publisher or the Rivei Falls, Wis.,
Times with a job priming plant
in connection. Selling his news
paper and job plant he came to
Glcndale in November In l'Jhl.
Here he purchased the Glemlale
New, a weekly publication then
owned by W. K. Homme, also a
former WIscouhIu man. Mr. Smith
published the Glemlale News for
five years, selling his printing
business lo J. K. Coet In J!il2.
In August, 1HI.K. Mr. Smith
bought the Glemlale Telephone
company. This company bad been
organizd two years previous by
II. L. Darby. Dr. A. P. Sether. Dr.
K. I). Slewart nnd others, and had
a small switchboard In Ihe rear
of Darby's drug store. Telephone
service was some w hat haphazard.
A call was usually considered
something to be annoyed with
while trying to wait on some cus
tomer in Ihe drug store out fu
front. Mr. Smith moved the
switchboard into the Glendale
News office. Whoever was al the
typecase nearest the switchboard
was usually the early day opera
tor. Wlien Mr. Smith bought the
Glendale Telephone company It
had 3b subscribers. Since that
lime there has been an average
Increase In calls to each subscribe!
of about 300 per cent and thr
company now- has about 5 times
as many subscribers. The amount
of long distance business has In
creased (hiring Mils pfrlod about
1000 per cent. Much of the credit
for Increased business and better
ed local phone service goes to Mrs.
Sm i I h who has served at Lhe
switchboard much of the lime.

street from Ihe former Glendale
News office and Ibis has been the
home of the telephone company
ever since. The old residence
was destroyed by fire In Steptem--ber
of 1928 but the switchboards
