on Tuesday Afternoon
The Roseburg Woman's club
members enjoyed their Christmas
party at tin club rooms on Tues
day afternoon with a fine at tend
ance tif members and friends. The
regular business meeting was held,
with Airs. A. G. AlcAlillin, president,
in charge. Ccmmuniiy tinging fol-
lowed. Airs. Hugh Whipple ,sang
two delightful Chrlrlnias carols and
Rev. Perry Smith gave a beauti
ful Christinas talk. A brilliantly
lighted Christmas tree and the ex
change of gifts were features of
the afternoon.
Light refreshments were served
at lovely Christ mns decorated
lables by Mrs. Carl Neal and Mrs.
Foster lint nor. A centerpiece of
j holly and fruit and a sprig of
mistletoe at each cover was useu.
The outside of the club house
was decorated with greenery as
well as the inside of the house.

of Mrs. William Hell and Mrs.

Meeting Proves to Be
Successful Affair Friday
The regular meeting of the
Days creek parent -teacher asso
ciation was held on Friday eve
ning with over one hundred mem
bers and friends present. The busi
ness session was held during the
forepart of the meeting, at which
time it was decided to sponsor a
Hoy Scout troilp 1 his year.
The program of the evening
consisted of two basketball games.
The preliminary uame was played
by ,the Days creek girls" team
against the Glendale irls' team.
The main game of the evening
was between the Days creek boys'
team and the Ghudale bovs' team.
The evening was in charge of
Archie Fermison, president ; and

AUXILIARY ACTIVITIES
Despite a deluge of rain, a large
number of auxiliary members
were on hand at the regular busi
ness meeting' on Tuesday night to
hear the results of the member
ship drive. The news that Umpqua
Unit had exceeded her quota of
2ti2 by a substantial margin was
received enthusiastically. Hose
burg has the largest Unit in the
state with a paid membership of
276 for the new year and is on the
list of eligibles for a national cita
tion. Every city and town In Ore
gon is asking the question. "How
does Roseburg do it?" A letter of
congratulation from Mrs. Mabel
Mclnturff, department secretary,
states that Umpqua Unit does
each year what other units call
the Impossible. Umpqua Unit is
yery proud to bring this recogni
tion to Roseburg.
Mrs. George Caskey, chairman
of the membership committee,
who has worked so faithfully In
the drive, was awarded the beauti
ful silver pitcher, which was of
fered by the Unit to the girl who
secured the largest number of
members. Mrs. Caskey had 86
members to her credit. Mrs. Clair
K. Allen presented the silver
pitcher and Mrs. Caskey respond
ed and thanked the girls for their
cooperation in putting Uiupqim
Unit over the top. The president's
prize, a beautiful silver relish dish,
from Mrs. J. A. Soules, was award
ed to Mrs. Carl E. Wimberly, who
Won second place by securing 65
members.
While the membership drive Is
closed so far as active solicita
tion of members Is concerned, any
eligible person who desires to
join the organization is heartily
welcome. Those wishing to pay
dues before the honor roll Is com
pleted should get in touch with
Mrs. George Caskey or Mrs. Ru
dolph Riuman, secretary.

Soldiers' Home committee reports
her committee Is working hard to
aid in bringing Christmas-cheer to
the Soldiers' Home this year. The
committee is cooperating with tht
officers at the Home In every way
possible. The veterans will have a
Christinas tree, and a foal Santa
Clans with gifts for everyone. An
interesting program will be given
at the dinner hour on Christmas

Following the business session,
an entertainment was held. Quite
the hit of the evening was "The
Dancing Fool," an Ingenious toy,
which was made by a disabled
veteran in the hospital of Port
land and brought here by Ru
dy Ritzman, who recently returned
from Portland. Rudy urged the
doll through several dances nnd
following the exhibition a number
of ortlers were taken. Several who
bought were honest enough to ad
mit that they were satisfying their
own want, but it was remarkable
to note the number of heretofore
forgotten nephews, etc., whom
someone suddenly decided to make
happy. The entertainment was fol
lowed by refreshments and a so
cial hour was enjoyed.
The next meeting of the Unit
will be held at Cunyonville and
will be followed by a party with
the Legion.

New Idea Club Wednesday
Mrs. C. E. Marks and daughter-,
Miss Ethyl, were joint hostesses
on Wednesday afternoon, wheu
they entertained with a Christ
mas party for the members of the
New Idea club at the Marks home
in Rlversdale. The members gath
ered at noon for a pot luck lunch
eon, which was served at a large
table, centered with a lovely bou
quet of holly.
The chief point of interest was
a large Christmas tree. Imme
diately following the short busi
ness session, nil attention was
given to the tree, which was heav
ily laden with gifts for each mem
ber. The remainder of the after
noon was spent in conversation
and sewing.
