Ford Explains Crash
WASHINGTON', Nov. 21. Urn-1
ry Ford snid today after leavim! a
conference of businessmen called
hy the president that the first
thiiiK to do was "to corrccl the im
pression that the present rondl
lion of affairs is due to the stock
market."
"Collapse of speculation may
have been tile occasion of a hmi
nesa hesitation," Mr. Ford con
tinued, "but it certainly was not
the cause.
"The stock market does not
make prosperity but prosperity Is
absolutely essential to such an In
flation of values ns we have seen
during the past year. When an in
flated stock market breaks, it
does not necessarily carry gener
al business down with it, but when
eeneral business declines it In
variably deflates the artificial
values of the slock market.
"That is what happened. It was
only the temporal y diversion of
businessmen's attention that pre
f ' vented them from seeing what
was happening. It is now clear lo
all that the real explanation of
the present situation is not to be
found in recent stock market his
tory, but in recent business history."
by proving how dishonest republi
cans were."
lie asserted that he could not be
"contrite" for sins which lie had
"never coinuiitled." nor "proleud
to be ashamed of conduct" which
he said ho knew to have been "up
right." In addition, he reviewed tlie
contentions of his lawyers when
the two cases on which ho was
sentenced were ill the courts.
"I have just finished serving
sentences for contempt of tlie sen
ate ami contempt of court not for
any crime." lie said. "Uul the peo
ple seem to think that the pi nal
lics for contempt were in plaM of
punishment for some olher of
fense Willi which 1 was charged
but exonerated by a jury."
Sinclair Entered the jail on the
night of May 6 to servo terms of
six months for contempt of court
and three for contempt of the sen
ale. Portions of Ihe two sentences
ran concurrenlly and with deduc
tions for good behavior, he was
confined to the jail for six months
and fourteen days.

Wit h the thermometer standing

the outskirts of the Siskiyou na
tional forest, southwest of here.
One fire was reported eating its

from Del Norte county. Calif.
Another fire with a five-mile
frontage was being driven east
waul a few miles from Harbor,

Additional fire fighters were be
