right on playing. Meanwhile Knarf,
followed by MIJ, Flor and Yam,
sprang upon the flute. Thoy took
care not to trip over the fingers
as they peeked into the little
opeulngH, looking for the notes.
They could see none, for ihe note
sped past ao swiftly that they
could onlysbe heard.
"I'll go down and, get one.,"
Knarf wild, letting himself Into
one of the openings.
"Don't!" Hanld called up. "Some
thing Is sure to happen."
Knarf didn't hfed her. He 'et
himself down a bit farther. Un
fortunately Master Knarf was not
quite small enough to slip through.
He remained stuck midway. In
consequence a note, coming along
at this moment was unable to get
out. so Instead of singing sweetly
as a good note should. It squeaked
like a rusty hinge.
"What's that !" exclaimed the
neighbor, stopping at once, and
eyeing the opening" Knarf covered
with fer. but he wasn't discover
ed. Instead the man gave a sharp
pouf and blew the shadow-bsy in
to the flute.
"Sop blowing!" Knr shouted.
"Stop blowing at once!"
Strange to relate, the wind sud
denly died down. Knaif f"lt very
proud of hin.self as he slowly and
deliberately walked towards the
top. Itefore beginning to look
around for th notes, he poked his
head out of the opening and nod
ded to Hanid.
"Yon see." he boasted, "when I
give an order it's obeyed."
No sooner did the words leive
his mouth than th" neighbor bh'w

tho Umpqua Pulp A Paper com
pany, it has been announced.
Strategic Sites Acquired
About 30,000 acres of timberland
are included in the transaction. In
addition to tho town of Gardiner
and the Immediate surrounding
country, tho holdings are at strate
gic locations lu the Smith river and
Loon lake districts.
At present the government Ib
working on the construction of a
Jetty at the mouth of the Umpqua.
affording Gardiner a good harbor.
The jetty on the north Imnk is
practically complete, and Mr. Ned
erhoed anticipates that large Japa
nese s'eamers can dock at Gardi
ner within three years.
The sawmill win employ about
12U men when tt is running to lite
capacity anticipated. Tho pulp)
plant will afford employment for
about 150, It Is expected, and. of
course, others will be employed in
the woods.
