Aug. 7. Four hundred and eighty
cases -of illness among convicts at
San Quem In prison were revealed
today by Warden James K. lioio-
han. who said the epidemic, had
been prevalent for several days.
The prison population is approxi
mately 4r,iM) and laying off of near
ly 5U0 prisoners from the work
shops crippled prison routine for a
time and strained hospital facili
ties. Warden Holohan said a similar
outbreak of dysentery but a less
serious one occurred last year and
the year before.

day nnd flames were roaring up
the steep sides of mountains on
either side of Boise basin, while
scores of men fought desperately
to control them.
The report to the state hind de
partment Indicated that the fire
originated In the town's hotel,
from a gasoline explosion. It de
stroyed the postofflce. the Smith
building and the Frank Daly pool
hall, as well as homes.
Leaping from these buildings to
the nearby timber, the flames were
fanned by a stout, breeze nnd
spread in both directions rapidly.

a modern skyscraper hotel soon
will provide additional means for
the soul-saving work of San Fran
cisco Methodists. .
While not entering the hoi el
business themselves, they will reap
the profit from the operation of
the hotel when the 27-story combi
nation church and hotel they are
erecting in the heart of the city is
opened next fall.
The first four floors will be the
home of the Temple Methodist
church, and the rest of the $2.)i0.
ooo structure will be devoted to
catering to transients of the cty.
In undertaking the gi aulic busi
ness project, the churchmen or
ganized a corporation which will
be the landlord Tor the building,
leasing the fi:H-room hotel to an
operating company from whom It
will collect the rent.
Phe profits will he administered
by the corporation. Financially un
stable churches will be aided, con
tributions made to various Metho
dist benevolences, ami some
money will be used to strengthen
interest In Christian work. Temple
church will raise its own funds.
The Man Behind
Back of the project is the dynam
ic Tigure of Dr. Walter John Sher
man, pastor of the church, who dis
carded the rouuh garb of a stone
cutter to become a builder of the
Christian kingdom. Now a doctor
of divinity, Or. Sherman recog
nized the need for a mammoth
structure and sold the idea to his
congregation.
