PROTECTING OUU WILD LIFE
GOVERNOR PATTERSON,' speaking before the Oregon
Game Protective nsyoeiation, at its meeting; here yes
terday, voiced the opinion that- the wild life of Oregon is
one of the state's greatest assets. He went further in say-
injr-'Jiat, with proper care, fish and game will soon become
the greatest drawing power

at'l'iis disposal, the governor should know.
"''Within the past several months, . the governor said,
many well-to-do sportsmen have made their homes in Ore
gon because of its scenic beauty and' wild life. Their
friends will come to play and will remain to live. Others
will come and still others, until, within a few years, we will
find the governor's prediction come true. .
in the meantime it is up to us of Oregon and Douglas
county to see that this wild life is preserved and protected
to assure a plentiful supply in the future. There is no rea
son under the sun why there should not be-just as many or
more fish and game animals for the next generation as there
are for' us. Common sense and reasonable care will accom
plish this purpose.

When you talk about the future of aviation, you gen
erally talk about airplanes. To most of; us the. dirigible,
..vhile fascinating to watch, does not figure greatly. It seems
io clumsy, too fragile, liut Commander C. E. Rosendahl of
te U. S. navy, who runs the Lakehurst air station, believes
iiat the dirigible's future is quite as bright as that of the
nlane. The commander recently told graduates of Haver
i'ord college that in a few years huge dirigibles, six times
thq size of the present Los Angeles, will be making regular
commercial trips over the Atlantic. They will carry hun
dreds of passengers in 'perfect safety, and huge quantities
of freight, and will carry their own airplanes which they
., can launch and pick up in mid-air. Most of us, probably,
will hope that he is right. The dirigible has a spell all its
own. The thought of a mighty flying liner catches the
imatrmation; it gives a tin ill that the quick, soaring airplane
cannot give. v

' this pioneer skyscraper will be put through all kinds of tests,
!. so that the experts can toil definitely just what, if anything,
'A has happened to it. The new knowledge thus gained will
:i prove of great value in future steel construction work.

I RECENTLY I had the privilege of addressing a group of house-
wives. There were several thousand women in my audience and
each one was vitally interested in improving her home.
The time and labor saving devices on- display were of Intense
interest to me. To be sure, it Is not within the
means of every family to have all these things.
I wish it were. But every woman can have her
housework made lighter with Just a bit of good
management.
Electric washing machines, vacuum cleaners,
dish wnshera, floor polishers, refrigerators, cake

appliances lessen the labors of the overworked
housekeeper, I would not have tho entire house

WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE
Philip Kdison is host at a night
club party to his just-recently-divorced
wife and Oliver Sewell,
sportsman and Don Juan. Edison
presumes that SewelT and the di
vorcee are- to be married. When
the party breaks up. Edison goes
to SpwcM'a home and, while he is
awaiting his return, is informed
Seweil has been found dead.- In
spector Marx begins a- police in
vestigation. He questions Sew ell's
Russian valet. The elevator operat;

see Sewell return. A' young medi
cal examiner, with a taste for de
tective work, assists' Marx. Their
search of the apartment reveals
complete wardrobes for women in
different colors. In a safe-deposit
box they find a scrap of paper
hearing the Inscription, "Paid in
Full". The following day a Major
Preston, who has been a sporting
associate of Sewell's, la interrogat
ed. Then Sewell's widow visits the
apartment.

seemed dumbfounded and leaned
back thoughtfully.
"Think there's any chance of
her having done It In a crazy min
ute, and then forgetting it? Why's
she so anxious to pin it on the
Major? And then again why's the
Major so anxious to pin it on hor?
That's what gets me."
Sergeant Curraway hustled into
the room.
"Boss." ho addressed Marx,
"we've been busier than hell. Now
here's the lay-out "
"Shoot," invited Marx.
"Mrs. Edison is the woman in
blue. She was living at a hotel in
the Sixties. We went there. And
we found out she's disappeared."
"Blown?"
"Yep. Hasn't been hack since the

Marx shook his head.

ALFALFA TOUR
AND PICNIC AT DAYS
CREEK SUNDAY
An iilfltlfu tour and pfenic
lays Creek Sunday was attended
by more than sixty residents of
that vicinity. Several important,
alfalfa demonstrations have been
conducted in the lnya Creek vicin
ity, and yesterday morning an in
spection was made of each experi
ment. Tite tests wore made at the Ar
chie Kuikusoii, Peter L'lam. J. I).
Wright and Joint Ferguson places.
At the first three named experi
mental plots were treated to sul
fur and land plaster fertilizer on
the basiB of '50 pounds to the acre.
The experiment showed 300 per
cent increase over the unfertilized
sections on the second cutting. Un
treated land yielded .8 of a ton per
acre, for the second cut, 2.4 tons
per acre where fertilizer was used.
At tiie Joitn 1'Vrguson place an
experime nt was made with inocula
tion. Alfalfa that had been inocu
lated ran 4.32 tons to the acre on
the riist mutiny, while .the unin
acululed crop was only 1.2 tons
per acre.
