vili! n,'!i-a;'iviiiture." There is stated in a sentence the
cruilml ihf liic Kt-ow inn niaiiii'estaliini of opposition to the
)iec".mi ilT hill as passed liy the house. Under that bill the
cniisiinier, in. Vdinx; the fanner, will pay more than now for
practically everything he uses. Some 2000 schedules have
been raised.
l'ic.-iiU rt lloovu-'s call was for limited tariff revision
wild especial con.-iilcration lor the needs of the farmer. He
let il be Know n that in addition to this he would not oppose
prelection for industries that could show their need. Anioni;
theie latter llie textile industry is conceded a place. It is
notldoiujt well. So also must be included the lumber indus
try. whose prosperity is but nei;lii:ible.
.'The President has recently said that lie wants a tariff
bill' tiiat w ill protect both producer and consumer. He is
.'.aid to have had in mind particularly the house sugar
schedule a.s one which violates that intention. This schedule
was put in I he bill at the instance of American beet suifnr
mahcrs. K idenee at the hearings was that this industry
has been paying dividends of ISO per cent a year upon com
mon stock. On the face of that showing it can hardly be
said to need ferther tariff protection. The proposed duty
on sugar of three cents a pound would amount to a C0 ler
cent fld valorem tax. As domestic production of sugar falls
slnrrl by some ;i,00ll,0(K) tons a year of supplying domestic
needs1 that would mean that upon that amount of sugar the
larift would have to be paid. It would fall, of course, di
rectly upon the consumer, including the farmer.
The su;;ai' schedule is only one point of attack in the
house, tariff bill. There are others deemed quite as vulner
ableJ5 lien measured by what the President thinks the coun
try wants and needs and what he recommended. Ilecause
of them ul! and because a strong minority in the senate is
determined against tlumi the big fight on the tariff is still
ahead.

to say each of ' the proposed houses is built or faced with
pris ed brick. Prick h.i'ises are probably well enough
in C'iiieago where thick walls are needed to stop stray bul
lets, hut here in Oregon we think houses-made of lumber
are yetly nice. Ik re in Oregon also w e have enough stand
ing Umber to make lumber for the whole nation's houses for
many years to come.

You sing as ir you're melancholy,

You think your mate's the nicest
