BATTLE TODAY II
IL
(A-xUtott l'rm laat Win-)
The impending battle between
the American League titans tended
somewhat to dim (he fury of the
National league battle yesterday.
and caused tne auxiliary campaign
in the Aineritau league to miss ail
out passing attention. For all of
t his fact the rejuvenated Cubs
shelled Grover Cleveland Alexan
der and others sufficiently to shade
the Cardinals by 7 to 6 lor the
fourth strain Chlcugo triumph.
The Giants whaled the Phillies
by 11 to 6 and Hie Braves won an
other from the Robins. 4 lo 2, in re
maining National league fixtures.
The Pirates uud the Reils wore
idle.
Results In the National league
gave the Cubs a somewhat more
t-'omfoi table margin over the Pi
rates, and dropped the champion
Cardinals further into the mire ol
third place. The gain of the Giaut.s,
except in regard to their Immediate
designs upon third plane, was
negligible.
The American league campaign
yesterday 'consisted of victories lor
Boston, Detroit and Chicago. The
Athletics uud the Yankees, of
course, were idle. The Red Sox ral
lied to pull out a 6 to 4 decision
against Ad Liska and Brown in
Washington as MacFayden checked
the Senatorial attack at eight hits.
Young Ed Walsh pitched lour hit
ball against St. Louis to win by 5
to 3, and the Detroit Tigers hit
hard to win by K to 4 over the In
dians In Cleveland.
The victory of the Cubs, the most
important achievement in either
circuit yesterday, gave the Brutus
a record of twelve out of their last
fifteen, including their run of four
igainst the champions.
The 7 to 6 victory yesterday was
marked by Hack Wilson's fifteenth
and sixteenth home runs, and by
.tne from the bat of Andy High of
St. Louis.

number of prune orchards of the
county and may become a serious
menace if the present moist weath
or continues. However, it is prob
able that more favorable weather
will soon prevail, making control
measures unnecessary at this time.
Brown rot gerriis are nearly
always in orchards ready to Infest
'rnll when conditions become right.
Dense growth of the trees, heavily
laden with fruit, cnmbiurd with
the high humidity of the air, and
moisture on the fruit, are ideal
conditions for the development of
bro n rot.
Spraying wllh atomic or wet-
table sulphur, 12 pounds to 100 gal
lons of water, with a spreader, is
safe and effective.
Dusting with finely ground mil-!
nhur dust Is just as effective as j
l he liquid spray and has the udvan-1
taue oi ease and rapidity ut appli
cation. Odd varieties and seedlings of
sweet cherries causing a heavy set
of fruit on adjoining Royal Ann,
Uimhert and Ring trees in your
own orchard la the safest and sur
est source of grafting and budding
wood to be used as your pollinlz
ers. according to C. L. Long, ex
tension horticulturist. At least
three of these varieties, whether
umied varieties or seedlings,
should be used as polllnizers
throughout your orchard. They will
give you a longer blooming season
which may be sufficient to coun
teract unfavorable weather condi
tions. Now Is the best time to lo
cale and mark these effective pol
linizurs. No combination of named va
rieties is roliablo unless the com
bination from which the trees
have been propagated are all from
one orchard which has demon
slrated Its ability as u producer.
Strains of Royal Anns, Lamberts
and Rings together with proven
polllnizers are now available from
several Oregon nurserymen.
