This represented an Increase of 7,

was about the same as for the pre
vious year, the directory announce
ment said.
The Portland metropolitan dis
trict has a population of ;iil5,3G2,
an Increase of (i,s27 over 192S.

though ihe husband of Alberta
Hlalr died of typhoid fever and not
by accident, she Is entitled to state
compensation under the workman's
compensation act, according to a
Jury verdict 'in the circuit court
here yesterday. Uiair died from
typhoid resulting, it was said, from
di inking the water of Kogue river
a hue working for the state high
way department. The plaintiff
contended that the highway com
mission was negligent in allowing
the water to be used. The defense
declared the workmen had been
warned not to drink It. The case
was first tried last fall but the
Jury disagreed.
Janitors who enter into contracts
with their employers come within
the scope of the workmen's com
pensatloti act, for they are still
employees, according to an opin
Ion by Attorney General Van
Winkle. The opinion was in reply
10 an inquiry by the state indus
trial accident commission, and per
tained to Janitors in the Portland
public schools who have entered
into contracts with the school
board.
