ROSEBURG, OREGON,
EARLY last week a radio station in California hroartcast
. inj? the merits of a make of motor oar made mention of
the effect that even over "roujjh corduroy road in Oregon"
the car performed perfectly. The broadcast in question was
a log of a tip from San Francisco up the Uedwood high
way to Crescrt City, thence to Crants Pass and south over
tho Pacific highway to San Francisco. Any one who has
been over this particular route knows that there is a rough
unfinished piece of road between Crescent City and Grants
Pass but IT IS IN CALIFORNIA. Mistakes are pardon
able, we all make them and this was a mistake. The entire
matter is ni.t worth a great deal of time but parts of a let
ter recehed from the managing director of the broadcast
inj station, concerning the incident, AUK interesting:
"In this i oniinuity t his example of a difficult piece of
roadled was not confined to I In- nderenrn lo a peculiar io.nl
lnd cxmsi t ucted in On-con; reference wan a I mo made lo un-
usual rufrdbvd conditions in oilier localities. Certainly It
.would he ub.aud to, in iiddressinK a Western motoring public,
cast any aspersions on the splendid roadways of your Male.
'in the. I'.kUi of i he Impression which you received mid
which we now must think was possibly shared y others, we
Indeed regret the unhappy allusion to a corduroy toad In
'Oregon. We wanted to refer lo many condiiions of roadbeds
'.difficult of pat-sne and among the Illustrations, naturally, came,
. a corduroy road. Wo know (hat In some remote places In
Oregon, as well its in California and in Washington, (hero
'are some such roads, and that ihey are found in all logging
communities. There was no reason why wo should not have
referred to California as (here 1b probably more mileage of
this kind or load In t his slate Ihan (here Is In Oregon, hul it
did nut jiiHt r.o happen. We want to assure you that there was
., no design In the matter whatsoever. Our audience la prol
ably greater per capita in Oregon (hat it is in California, and
wo certainly would not deliberately be guilty or offering any
tiff rout.
"We have In prepaiation for an early release, in con
nection with this program, a descriptive journey over the beau
titul highways or Oregon. Certainly the complimeiiliu-y terms
'In which reference will bn made to (In highways of Oregon
wilt overcome an possible impression that may have been
received from this allusion which appeara to have been mis
. Interpreted."
You see. he seems to have the best intentions, but still
is unable to realize that the statement was a plain flat error.
This managing director of a great radio broadcasting sta
tion, and others equally uninformed, will be surprised to
learn that Oregon has three north and south highways com
pleted up to specification to the California line and NOT
ONti of these highways is met at the California line by a
completed highway of equal standard.

WOULD NAME SCOTTSBURG
BRIDGE FOR PIONEER
TOUT Oltl-'OIC'j, Ore., May 2u
Kditor New s Review June, 1S51
nine men stood behhnl a bur
liedly constructed breastwork
on a rock at Port Orford,
Curry county, Oregon. Before them
on the beach was a tribe of sav
ages ready for at tact. Nine men
stood their grounds for several
days, fought back the Indians.
These nine brave men will go
down in Oregon history as the
bravest of Ihe pioneers. One of
these men was Cyrus Hedden. A
bouk could be wiltten of bis dar
ing deeds and acts of kindness to
those In need on Ihe Oregon coast
in ihe early fifties. Ills battle with
the Indians near the mouth of the
( 'oquille river shows more clear
ly ihe manhood of this greatest of
pioneer men. No one is living who
can tell as an eye witness of tills
wonderful feat ot friendship for a
com rade. Hedden and Williams
with otheis encountered Indians
two miles above the mouth of the
Coquiile river. Their canoe drilled
into shoal waler. and the fight was
then inaugurated. It was every
one for himself. The men rushed
IWr Ihe shore. Others were killed
outright. Williams ami Hedden
reached tho shore fighting iheir
way tiiM best they could. Wil
liams was clinched by a heavy sav
age. In the struggle they fell with
Williams on top. His knife fiifish
ed the brute, but while down an
other Indian drove an arrow inlo
his groin. lie sprang to his feet
and Hedden pulled out the shaft
leaving a three-inch piece to which
the arrow head was attached. They
encaped to Hi brush, holding Ihe
Indians at bay with their guns.
While so doing they made good
work and caused much mourning
in the Indian camp. H was not
long betore the fatal arrow shall
and head bean their terrible work,
i-ausing much acute pain ami in
tense suffering. The following
day his bowels commenced swell
ing. He could only with the great
est difficulty put his foot to the
ground. He was not left bv the
wayside to die. That great big
hearted companion would gather
sollal berries for him to eat and
night after night would carrv
him on his hack. Williams begged
to he permitted to lie down and
die. Hedden eiuouraged him and
helped him every way he could.
After nine days of suffering thev
readied the rnipmia river. Then
j seven miles up the river by boat
