Installation of the equipment for projection of "talking pictures at the Antlers theatre has been completed and the first showing will be made Friday night, when "Weary River," fea turing Richard Barthelmess, is presented. Roseburg patrons have been awaitingimpatiently for several months while the theatre management has been endeavoring to secure delivery of the equipment, the factories being far behind with their orders, so great has been the public reception of the new device. The "talking" picture equipment is installed by the Ump qua Amusement company, owners of the local theatres, in an effort to keep the Roseburg theatres abreast of the times and event to anticipate the wants of the theatre going public of Rosebi The Viiaplione sot which ihe engineers in the Antlers Theatre have installed, is identical villi the sets which have, gone into all Publix and West Coast houses on the Pacific coast, including the AVurfield at San Francisco, Klfni Avenue at Seattle, the Portland and Music Box in Portland, the John Hamrick circuit of theatres in (lie Pacific Northwest. The type of installation will play any talking picture produced either of the film or disc form. "The Film term of sound syn chronizing is' the newest of the two," Mr. Gross said today, "and it undoubtedly will be the, most popular with all film producing companies in a short time, but ow lug to ft being impossible lo g-t enough pictures of one type for the number of changes that Koseburg will require, we are compelled to Install the two devices in order io ;et the proper amount of service." l'ue to the fact that many pic tures have been booked ahead, not knowing the date of the Vilaphouv Installation, it will he necessary t; intersperse a few silent pictures occasionally, Mr. Gross slates, biV each program will include bouw talking or singing feature. The public generally speaking, is not yet on intimate terms with the mechanical functioning of Vita phones, he declared. The subject is a new one and like all new sub jects, the public must bo educated to understand the relative merits of it. There are two methods of talking picture mechanics one of ,the Disc method which is used by Warner's, known as Vitaphono and the Film torm used" by Fox, Mo vieton News, Pat he and the iladio Corporation of America. Best for Patron The Autlers Theatre. In which the new equipment is being in stalled. Is known up and down the coast as a theatre of exceptional beauty. It reflects the ardent de sire of the owners to add their ; "bit" to progress and the modern development of Koseburg and their faith in the community which it must serve. The' Antlers is again investing several thousand dollars In the I purchase of even more modern equipment, In order that Roseburg may enjoy the same entertainment found In other progressive cities. It naturally follows that the pro grams which will be booked for Koseburg theatre goers will be the finest that can be bought and selec tions made with the greatest 6f care. Patrons of the Antlers theatre who view the current showing of "Weary Kiver,-' the new First Na tional feature starring Kichard Barthelmess, will hear the music and words of what is freely pre dicted a national song hit, the title of which is the same as the title of (he film, "Weary River." The song, "Weary Kiver," was composed by Grant Clarke and Louis Silvers, the former on the lyrics and the latter on the music. It is a crooning, ballad type, spe cially designed for the feature film of the same name and with a view lo popular appeal. The hero, a con- vict, sings and plays the song in the unfolding of the story. Frank Lloyd directed "Weary River," and Hetty Compson plays the feminine lead opposite Barthel mess. It is a First National Vita phone feature, the first in which Barthelmess is heard in dialogue and song. The story is based on original by Courtney Kyley Cooper. LONG EXPERIENCE TALKING PICTURES Acoustical Effects Found Perfect; No Distortion in Reproduction of Voices. In the installation or draperies, curtains or other equipment to re or song without distoriation. produce the voice in spoken words it was found, however, that nothing of this- sort was necessary in the Antlers theatre. The high ceilings, together with the low bal cony and general arrangement have perfect acoustics, so that it was a very simple matter to secure perfect results. The big horns are mounted dl- Lrectly behind the screen, and the sound is carried clearly to every part of .the building, and exhaust ive tests have shown that the maximum quality of the voices of the adors is faithfully reproduced. The amplifying device is in twb units, so that if a tube burns out in one, or some electrical failure oc curs, the other unit is automatically-thrown into the circuit, so that there will be no break or interrup tion. Another delieato instrument controls the current, so the syn chronizatlon between the film and the record is constantly main tained automatically. n keeping with the policy of furnishing Koseburg theatre goers the best possible type of motion picture entertainment, the Umpqua Amusement company has complet ed installation of a Vltaphoue de vice at the Antlers theatre and will present the first talking picture i program in Koseburg Friday night. The Umpqua Amusement com pany, owners of the Antlers and Liberty theatres, is headed by George Hunt of Medt'ord,. who is president of the concern. Julius Wolf of Medford is secretary-treasurer, and K. A. Gross of Koseburg is manager. The company purchased three Roseburg theatres November 1, 1927, but closed the Majestic nnd has since been operating only the Antlers and Liberty. Mr. "Gross, the local manager, has : been connected with the motion picture business in- Koseburg fori the past four years. He formerly ! operated theatres in Wyoming for a period of ten years, com Koseburg direct from that state. Coming Attractions at Antlers Theatre opening Barthelmess feature, "WEARY RIVER" with and netty Compson, talking and Installation of the apparatus foi the production of talking pictures requires many conditions for suc cess, arrording to O. D. Dark, who put the new machine 'in .the Ant lers theatre. The acoustical qualities of the auditorium are by far the most serious problem, as It Is absolutely necessary that the horns be located properly to insure the best results from the Vita phone pictures. Frequently it becomes necessary, because of the echoes and distor tion caused by certain theatre auditoriums to go to much expense CURRY CO. " Scarcely more than a year ago, there was an invasion into the field of motion pictures, made possible through the inven tion of two devices known as "Vitaphone" and "Movietone." The Vitaphone, pioneer in the field, had been an' experiment tried out more or less successfully by Warner Brothers, film pro ducers. Through this deice, synchronized music and singing were first used. The Warner Brothers, however, found it difficult to foster the movement which they had started a few years before, and which they maintained would revolutionize the production of motion pictures. In the first place, only n few theatres In the United- Ktntos would liny the equipment, as it wna an exclusive Warner llros. feature; and in the second place, only their own pruduct was available, its oih- ofl'icer. Mr. Gross Is ably assisted in the local work by his son-in-law, Lloyd Claver, who serves us assistant manager.
