College Degree's Value Shown by Survey Worth $56,000 More Than High School Diploma, Figured on Earning Capacity. BIRMINGHAM, Ala.. May 8. . P.) A college degree Is worth $:1tU00 more than a high school diploma, according tb statistics gathered by Dr. C. B. Glenn, super intendent of llirmingham schools. His figures are based on the Al pha Kappa Psi fraternity's survey on occupational incomes from all types of occupation and grades of education. The statistics were compiled from 7.3ti9 reports received by the fraternity from all states in the union. The survey was conducted lo show whether a college educa tion actually paid in dollars and cents. "The untrained man," Dr. Glenn found, "with only an element ury education, .goes to work at 14. Ho reaches a maximum income at "Ifi," earning on the average less than M,7()u a year. His total earnings from 14 to CO are about StM.tKil). "The high school graduate goes to work at IS, four years later, and passes the maximum of t lie ele mentary trained man In 10 years. "He rises steadily to his own maximum of $2. son at 50 and then falls off to about his 4u-year aver age. His earnings from 18 lo (10 total about Sss.OOu, just $24, nun more than that earned by the ele mentary trained boy. This indi cates that each of the four years of a high school boy's life is worth ?;.nti to him. "The college graduate goes" to work at 22. By (he time h- Is 31 his income equals that of the hitrh school graduate at 40 and con tinues steadily lo rise. Total earn ings from 22 to tu is approximate ly $141. mm. With queen bees selling for as mueh as $5 each and the whole world for a market. J. W. Sherman, South Georgia apiarist, has devel oped a way to deceive the crea tures so that their capture Is mere ly a matter of routine. He manufactures a false honey comb that, ts ao perfectly construct ed that even the nueen doesn't ree ocnize ihe deception and makes tier way to the special cell that Sherman'has devised as a trap. He never fails to lure the queen from any siven comb section. Sherman f-avs the i-tralec makes it unnecessary for htm to serane around I lie whole hive, probably injuring or kill in? many bees in the search for their queen. There never are manv queens. Usually there is orly one in a hive. When there are more they fiht. A queen is hatched from the same kind of cut; that hatches a worker or a drone. She becomes a queen only when, as a ktuI). the workers stnirle her out for special feeding. The same food, given any other erub, would produce a queen bee. The workers feed only enough grubs to keep the colony supplied with a queen. j The oueen. mating only with the; drone that flies as hiirh, fast, and; far as herself, has the entire re-; sponsibilfty of populating her col-i ony. The workers do not produce ' eggs. Surplus drones, which neither' collect food nor make honey, are1 stung to death by the workers. j Apiarists who breed oueen bees' for the market frequently talte food; from the comb in which a queen! bee is being reared and place It in other sections, the deception en couraging the. workers to feed sev-1 eral queens at the same time.
