STIL LLACKING
IN HESS CASE
(Continued from page 1)
A resolution urging the city air
port comniiHion to purchase the
full tract of land originally laid out
for airport purposes and approved
by the voters in th special bond
election was adopted by L'mpqua
J'ost of the American Legion at the
regular. meeting held last night.
! The commission haw been work
ing upon the theory that it would
be bi-st to buy 00 acres of the 140
acre tract, which would leave an
additional f5,000 for improvements.
The legion post, however, feels
that It would be better policy to
secure enough land to permit fu
ture extensions, pointing out that
the land values may advance so
materially that the cost to the cty
of acquiring additional acreage in
lle future may be prohibitive. It is
felt by the legion post, which initi
aled the movement and carried it
successfully through to approval by
the voters, that enough laud should
he obtained to make it possible tor
the city to gradually add to the
Improvements and provide a first
class aviation field. The resolution
resulted in a great deal of discus
sion and was passed unanimously.
It was decided to observe the
usual custom of cooperating with
the other patriotic organizations of
the city in sponsoring the .Memorial
day prorgam. A committee will be
named to meet like committees
from the other rgoups and will
work out arrangements for the
celebration.
A committee was also appointed
to cooperate with the Spanish war
veterans In working out the ar
rangements for their department
convention to be held here July
lii-ltt and 17.
Vincent O'llrien, who is In
charge of the junior baseball
j league activities reported that all
io Mir teams are now practicing
land that some excellent games
have been played. A county team,

by May 20 to play at Tort land.
cerned. Under existing law not
more than three commissioners
may be of the same political party.
.Salaries of the commissioners
would be advanced from fclo.wO to
ll.eeo and their terms of office
would be for seven years instead
of twelve as at present. The com
mission secretary would be paid at
the rate of 87,500 annually.

Charles Dant of Pant and Rub
sel, one of the leading Pacific
Northwest lumber compip'os, said
today the new tariff bill leavefl
much to be desired from the view
point of Oregon luinlwrinen.
"On cedar lumber and shingles,"
Dant said, "tlie duty is 25 per cent
ad valorum. For years there has
peen a demand that something be
done to shut out the shingles and
redar from Canada, and this de
mand appears to have been ie
cognized in the new bill.
"Hut the hill is of no value lo
this district because it does not in
clude, Douglas fir and hemlock.
The tariff on cedar and shingles,
however, does shut out Canadian
competition for the mills in parts 1
of Washington." !
Although ihe duty on fresh beef j
is practically doubled by the bill
U. C. Darnall of Swift & Company
dos not greet the proposition with
enthusiasm.
Darnall said such a high duty
will keep beef out of this country
"and cause home grown meat to
go so high in price that consump
tion will he curtailed."
"I do not," he said, "consider a
tariff that decreases consumption
advantageous to any Industry-"

Last week attorneys obtained
their release from the county jail
under heavy bond on the promise
of "their nppearance when the trial
was called, McGurn had been
trapped in a downtown hotel
where he had been hiding since the
day of the seven-fold murder. Sea

one of the dozen listed as "wanted"
by the police for investigation. '
End of a "Ride"
The pair were found heaped in
Ihe seat of a coupe that had been
nosed into a ditch near Wolfe lake.
Just Ibis side of the Illinois state
line, their bodies covered by a
blanket. Twenty feet away officers
found a third body, identified
tentatively as that of Joe Ciuiuta,
another gangland habitue.
1 i u in ta, who was thought to be
the third victim, was a west side
tobacco store owner and also had
been questioned In connection with
the Moran gang killings. All marks
of Identification had been removed
from the bodies.
The men. police said, were prob
ably taken for the familiar gang
land "ride," shot to death with
pistols or machine guns and the
car ditched on the lonely prairie
road. The cushion had been re
moved from the back seat and the
bodies dumped in its place.
