For a long minule Nan Carroll

for the sudden illumination had
forced upon her attention some
thing which she would have given
a week's salary not to have seen
that night.
It was just a snapshot framed in
bealen sliver, but it bad the pow
er to break her bard-won control.
A newspaper photographer's pic-
lure of a short, slim girl and a very
tall, thin man, caught in the act
of walking down a flight of while
marble Bieps, each carrying a brier
case, each grinning triumphantly
Into (he camera. The snapshot was
nearly two years old, taken at the
successful conclusion of one of
Morgan's biggest murder trials.
The caption under the picture aa
it had appeared In the afternoon
paper was: "Attorney John Curtis

tary, Miss Nan Carroll, leaving the
courthouse a few minutes nfler (be

client, 'Hig Joe' Connors, acquitted

cause the photographer had hap

She made no further pretense

The ugly phrase leaped at her In
Ihe darkness, and other ugly
phrases, which had only waited for

Therv was a queer comfort in let

Since she was an alumna of h's

had quickly made a place for her
in his office as a typist, and then,
within three months, had promoted

"I must have been In love with

"And I prided myself on my in

Her self-respect reared its bruised

you'd rather die than shirk. Don't
make yourself out worse than you
are."
"Ilut that's bad, bad!" Nan's
shame answered her self-respect.
"I've always despised irls who
made sentimental fools of them
selves over their bosses. And now
I'm worse than the worst of them.
I love nim" so terribly that I'd die
happy if he would kiss me just
once as he kisses her."
. And then she would have given
anything to banish the picture
which her last words brought up:

Some people make a fundamental
mistake jvhen they go to buy a car.
They receive a demonstration. They
compare the performance, the style

the new car seems just about perfect.
