AN AliSKNT-MIXDED BURGLAR THE absent-minded burglar has at last appeared to take his place alongside the absent-minded professor as a theme for jesters. In Chicago the other day a man broke into an apartment and helped himself to $.'5000 worth of jewels. As he was getting ready to go he saw a nice topcoat hanging in a closet. His own coat was shabby, so ho tossed it on the floor, put on the new one and went out. A few hours later the owners of the place came home and discovered the burglary. They picked up the burglar's discarded coat and prepared to throw it away, but a policeman happened to look in its pockets first. There he found the $;S0()0 jewels. The burglar had forgotten to transfer them to the pockets of the new coat. The grapefruit, these days, is an established part of the great American breakfast. Every morning it appears on millions of breakfast tables. It is a fine starter for the reg ular bacon-and-eggs program. Now, it appears, the British are getting the habit. The department of commerce has just discovered that England is now our best foreign market for grapefruit. I.ast year, for example, more than 421,000 boxes of the fruit were shipped from the United States to England as contrasted with a mere 15,000 boxes five years ago. This is good for everybody concerned good for the English householder, who gets a nice addition to his break fast menu, and good for the American fruit grower, who gets a broader market for his produce. o Things grow old quickly in this modem world. In Chi cago, a matter of 1)5 years ago, was built the world's first skyscraper the Tacoma building, 11 stories tall, erected on a new principle which made a steel framework carry all the weight. For years it was a marvel. Architects studied it, and the lessons it taught led to the construction of the tow ering buildings that mark every American city. But now it is being torn down after a scant 35 years of life. It'is out of date too small, too cramped. In its place will rise a ' building three times as high. o The Chicago Tribune has discovered that the jail popu lation in Kansas lias increased during prohibition.
