TUNNEL PROJECT !

LONDON. Jan., 22. Premier
Baldwin announced In the bouse of
commons today that a comprehens
ive non-party examination will be
made Into the 6u-year-old project
for a tunnel under the English
channel.
A tunnel under the KngMsh chan-1
nel connecting Kngland with thej
Hurnpeau mainland on the French
coast Is a project that has long'
presented fascinating engineering 1
difficulties although the political
aspect of the problem rather than
the engineering has always j
blocked progress.
On two occasions the house of
commons voted In favor of the pro-,
ponal and work was actually start
ed from the English side, but Brit
ain's committee on imperial de-1
fenae held the balance against the
project. British military strate
gists, arguing for national security,,
have always opposed the tunrjel.
An even more ambitious propos-j
al than the tunnel project, that of,
the construction of a 21 -mile
bridge, is also under discussion In ,
England.
