POEM FOR THE DAY
By LOUIS ALBERT BANKS
EZRA MEEKER PIONEER
More than any other mnn in our history. Kzra Meeker was
the epitome of the pioneer spirit. Born in Itt3(). coming first by
ox tram to OrrKon in 1852. he fjecmed to Rather into his very
soul the old pioneer spirit. What Daniel Boone was to Kentucky
in an earlier Generation. Ezra Meeker was to Oregon. He is the
last great personality connected with pioneer migration to the
Northwest the covered-wagon hero.
Brave F.ra Meeker, pioneer.
Hi never counselled with his fe.tr.
He was a gallant, daring soul.
And clung to his romantic role;
I le was a rare old frontier Scout
Vv hom dangers never put to rout;
hen prnirie schooners pointed west
'I was .ia Meeker gave them zest.
I see again those slow ox team.
I lis ghosts ot many nohle dreams.
I see those brave and d inng folks
Adventure never had to coax;
'Gainst h.tdships they so bravely bucked.
And in their hopes new states were tucked;
T hey br.it the war chief nt his game
And lived to win an honored name;
Amid the piiturcstjue and grand
I hey made their mark on this new land;
1 hey weie the tools of Providence
And had unnieasuted common sense;
I hev tamed the land and founded states
And gave them many noble traits;
Now o er their covered wagon trails
Ihe nitplnnes carry daily mails.
Hail Meeker. Western pioneer.
V e vive to you n lousnii; cheer!
Io Oieuon a faithful friend

(AMOciatrd r.ctt Lea ted Wire)
BOSTON. Dec. 11. Jack Rhar-
"key, Iloston heavyweight, who is
essaying a comeback, won a decis
ion latt night over Arthur Dekuh,
New York heavy.
Sharkey gave Dekuh a terrific
beating in their ten round en
counter but lacked punch and
finesse. He was heavy and slow,
and his timing was woefully off
with the result that he seemed un
able to land his hooks cleanly.
Although Dekuh appeared para
lyzed with fright when the bout
started and contented himself
throughout with merely staying
the limit, be took all Sharkey had
and neer seemed in danger ex

had him down for the count of

It was Sharkey's first fight'since
