Hurt by Car
J. R. Webb, local service station
employe, was Injured today when a
car which he was servicing was
versed suddenly, knocking him
down and bruising both Icrs. It is
possible that bones ' in the legs
have been broken, but this has not
yet been determined. He was taken
to Mercy hospital, where he was
placed under the care of Dr. E. V.
Hoover.

Plea to Taft Fails
WASHINGTON, Iec. 7. Chief
Justice Taft refused to stay the
hanging at San Quentln prison,
California, today of John Joseph
M alone, convicted of the murder of
his wife at Los Angeles a year
ago.

Spagnoli, of San Francisco, coun
sel for Malouf. that the attack

Another Plot Foiled
SAN QCKNTIN PRISON, Cal..
Dec. 7. Prison guards today frus
trated the third attempt to escape
planned by convicts within the
last two weeks when they pulled
George Williams, Los Angeles
burglar, out of a pile of lumber
and stone outside the prison walls.
Missing at linkup time last
night Williams was nought for
hours until his carefully construct
ed hiding place was discovered. He
hail evidently spent days In Its
construction. Williams, serving
from one to tPn years, was placed
in solitary confinement with the
prospect of time added to his pris
on term as punishment.
Lat week four condemned men
and two long term prisoners were
apprehended shortly before they
I were ready to put an attempt at

The regular meeting of Scout
troop No. 3 at the South Methodist
church, has been changed from

Scoutmaster Penhall announced
today. The change was necessitat
ed by the health meeting which is
to be held tonight In the church
auditorium.
Ex-Roseburg Lady Going South
Mrs. C. A. Sehlbrede left -Corvallis
today for San Francisco on
a visit to her son In-law and daugh
ter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Getlin, and
son, Harry. Mrs. Sfhlhrede will
spend Christmas holidays at the
Gettins home and will be there
until after New Year. Mrs. Sehl
brede has a number of friends In
rhe vicinity of the Golden Gate
and anticipates traveling over
much of that section. Corvallis

Turkey Shoots Being Planned
Both the Pistol and Rifle club
of Roseburg and the rock quarry
team are planning turkey shoots
preceding Christmas. The latter
will hold the shoot on December
16, shooting both for turkeys and
merchandise. The local group
will shoot for tuikeys only on De
cember 23. The Pistol and Rifle
club met this week to perfnct
plans for the coming event. The
club also held a shoot before
Thanksgiving at the ride range.
W. O. Roberts, of Portland Dray
men's and Warehouse association,
said all trucks should pay on the
same baBis regardless of use, that

Saturday the committee will dis
cuss the reports submitted. The

o'clock. Rev. Edwards, pastor of

Interment will lake place In the
Masonic cemetery. The parents of
the child, Mr. and Mrs. B. W.
Cooney, are both In the hospital
critically 111 with pneumonia, fol
lowing flu. Mrs. Cooney 'a condi
tion this afternoon was reported
very critical, while Mr. Cooney
also was In a serious condition.
He was former county agricultural

visitor In Koseburg yesterday. He
Is the national representative of
the Oregon Department of Spanish
War Veterans, and Is also a mem
ber of the department's commit
tee on the Soldiers' Home. He
spent considerable time yesterday
making an inspection at the state
institution. He will leave early
next month for Washington, I C.
for a meeting of the national exe
cutive committee of the veterans'
organization.
