THIS HAS HAPPENED j
Jerry Ruy decides that love is a
delusion and makes up her mind
to marry lor money. She works In '
a store and denies herself petty j

But their camp Is wrecked the

Alester Carntalrs, from an adjoin-

from his pilot, Dan Harvey. They!
escape injury; also Myrtle, but,
Dan picks Jerry up unconscious j

for the doctor and pays Myrtle for
the damage done.
The doctor finds Jerry not seri

a fuller examination at his office
next day. Roth men offer to drive j
her there and Jerry accepts Ales-1
ter because of bis money, although

amazed when he hands her a hun

the doctor's fee.
NOW 00 ON WITH THE STORY
CHAPTER V
She must not argue with Alester
Carat airs about money, Jerry told
hertwlf.
She t must be nonchalant cer
tainly 'he wouldn't admire humble
ness, and It was but fair that he
should bear the expense to which
he had put her. She could return
what was left of the hundred dol
lars after the doctor was paid.
She flushed a sunny smile at
him.
"Lucky for you I didn't break an
arm," she said.
He regarded her gravely.
"I'm glad you didn't, of course,"
he replied, "but I'd be happy to as
sume any liability I might incur;
with you.
Jtrry was slightly confused by
his remark, aud her confusion an
noyed her. He hadn't done any
thing to cause. her to add a double
meaning to, the things he said. She;
turned quickly toward the house J
Dr. Belden's office was iu his resf

Alester smiled as he watched
her go.
"Not bo dumb," he told himself ;
complacently.
When Jerry returned she handtd
him some folded up bills.
"Thirty-two dollars." she said,
meaning the change. "What is Dr.
Behten. a billionaire?"
"He's a renowned surgeon."
Alester told her. "What did h$ say
about you?"

for her Injury with dollars, except
as she must pay for it. The other
girl had accepted his cbei k for
$1M a little loo eagerly. He was
glad Jerry was different. Such
fcirl as Hhe, those who scorned
small change, usually wanted
something worth while, he be
lieved. He liktel costly things him
self even expensive playmates.
"I'm not to have any excitement
for a while," Jerry said, and
laughed softly.
Excitement! Why, not 48 hours
back the bottom fell out of her
world aud It bad been a tragedy.
And now she knew that It had
dropped her right Into an entirely
new universe, a universe that hith
erto had been only a dream to her.
"In that case I'll - have to see
that you're kept quiet," Alester as
sured her promptly. "Can't go
back to camp. Dan's taking the
plane over to the hangar, 1 think.
No room to take H off where it is."
Jerry wished he hadn't men
tioned Dan. For the moment he
was out of her mind. She'd been
getting a tremendous kick out of
spinning along on a work day in a
car that would have drawn a
crowd even If It had been parked
on Fifth Avenue.
Thought of Dan dispelled some
of htr thrill. She didn't want bint
to think that she had refused his
offer to bring her to Dr. Belden's
simply because Alester could ac
count for more gold . . . but that
was precisely why she had refused
him!
Jerry felt decidedly uncomfort
able. "We'll drive out to Port Jeffer
son and drop in for tea at the Roll
ing Stone Inn on our way back,"
Alester was saying. The prospect
of a drive appealed to Jerry per
haps a sense of motion and con
stantly changing scenes would
help her to think as she wanted to
think.
This was more than she'd ever
expected out of life and her en
joyment of it was clouded because
a man with dark blue-gray eyes
had magnetism In his touch. It
seemed cruel to Jerry that the I
realization of more than her wild
en t dreams would be so marred.
She told herself that she wan be
ginning to dislike Dan Harvey.
There had been days when she
worked In the humid, breathless
atmosphere of Fane's on which
she'd have been tempted to gam
ble with her soul at stake for a
drive like this.
The sweeping, wooded hills, the
sudden descents upon little harbor
villages, the landscaped grounds of
beautiful estates, the luxury and
speed of tbe high-powered motor
car all were exquisitely new to
Jerry. They seemed to release a
wcllRprlng of emotion, to cans'
her lo feel as tf she were fairly

soaring over the earth.
And yet her elation was dimmed i
by a troubled conscience feltj

wtio had been tender toward her. j
At Port Jfrfferiton they turned
back. Inland, and drove far beyond;
the sped limit on their way to
the Inn. Jerry thought of many!
coul black steeds charging furious
ly ahead of tht m. This men-made !
thing under the hood h-ld power
equal to nearly a hundred horses'
strength. Alester bad told her. j
Iiitiut'ticed by Atesler's import-;
ance nut (he knowhdKe that she
wad near Rome of the finest euiutt-s i
In the world. Jerry was prepared1
to unci ine uouing stone Inu a pa
latial place. (
She was both surprised and put!
at ease whiu Aiester turned thej
no of his car hi at the approach 1
lo wiiai looked like pnvuie home!
such as thy had passed by the
dozen. A shingle on the house bore I
the name, else Jerry would not
have been certain that they Were!
at their destination. j
" Alester parked the car on a'
pebbled space and helped Jerry I
out. She saw, on closer inspection,!
that the place was more linpres-l
ive than she had thought at first, j
There was a fountain in a more or:
less formal garden and as they ap-i
proached the entrance the door
swung open for them and a burly;
colored man in uniform greeted!
Alester familiarly. !
Jerry surmised that he must be'
a frequent visitor there. And fori
an instant she felt that the door
man regarded her lu what might
have been surprise or confusion!
or alarm. She could not decide i
which.
m 1
They were shown to a jucasantly
placed table on a screened porch.
Jerry noted that It had
more
luxuriant centerpiece than the
other tables. It seemed. In a way
she could not define, to be a spe
cial table. The waiter hadn't ex
actly shown them to it. but when
he led the way to that end of the
porch Alester had Indicated that
they would sit there.
Again it seemed to Jerry that
sho inspired something like con
sternation when the waiter glanced
at her. She became sttf-couscious.
Her dress, of course! She knew
that she wasn't dressed as the
girls of Alester's acquaintance
dresaed.
Oh. why had she been too Indif
ferent about camping to care what
she wore! All those pretty, dainty
things In her suitcase! She must,
get them tonight when she went'
a town with Myrtle and George. I
t wondered what time It was;
and ..jw long It required to have:
tea In the Rolling Stone Inn. She;
hoped they wouiil wait for her Ifi
she were late.
There seemed to be no hurry!
about bringing their refreshments.'
Indeed. Alester did not bother to'
give an order. Jerry expected him
to ak what she liked, but he
didn't eft) that either. 1
They talked. He'd befn awking
her questions all afternoon. Jerry
thought he must be deeply Inter

Presently, when she was wish

a tray and Jerry found a tall glass
filled with amber fluid and tink
ling R set before her. It looked
like tea. There was also a plate of
ttuy paper-thin aandwichen. jerry
regarded lhm greedily. She bad
eaten Rule at lunch. But Alester
Ignored them, not sven suggesting
mat sue nave one.
She looked around for sugar for
her tea. There was none.
Alester lifted bis glass. She
couldn't take tea without sugar.
"Will you please have the waiter
bring some powdered sugar?" she
asked, wishing she didn't sound bo
timid. The next time . . . when
she was better dressed . . . and
people didn't look at her so
strangely. ...
"Sugar!" Alester repeated. "I
don't think you'll need It with this.
No one ever has Improved upon
Sltm's mixing."
Jerry wondered what he meant.'
Perhaps Iced tea came to the table
already sugared at the Rolling
Stone Inn. She told herself that
she must be more careful about
making stupid breaks. She said1
nothing more about sugar but lift-!
ed her glass and took a drink from j
It. Instantly she set ft down, a!
startled expression on her face. )
This was not tea! j
Alester was watching her. j
"What's the matter?" he asked. j
"Don't you like it?" I
Jerry stuttered. Her throat tin-!
gled and her eyes smarted. She.
had almost choked over the strong
beverage and only an heroic swal-i

distress. i
"It's too strong," she managed
to say when she could take away!
the nupkin she had hurriedly j
pressed to her lips. i
"I'm sorry," Alester said. "I
should have .asked what you'd,

Jerry Bin i led at him. . j
"If you don't mind." she said
hesitantly, "i d like tea." Then
more boldly. "With sugar." I
