Jerry Kay decides that love Is a
delusion and, -after observing some
or the wrecked love marriages In
her own circle, calmly tIIn her
roommate, Myrtle, that she intend
to marry for money.
Jerry denies herself all the lit
tle luiuries and saves tier money
for a vacation at Atlantic City ia
"the best hotel." Hut her money is
stolen the night before her depar
ture. Jerry is stunned at her loss!
Plans for a wonderful two weeks
at the shore resort are spoiled, but
Myrtle finally persuades her to go
camping with her on the north
shore of Long Island. Myrtle's
sweetheart, George, drives them
out and arranges their tent and
equipment before returning to New
York.
Left alone, the girls take a swim
and then are busy enjoying their
evening meat when Jerry h
startled at the sound of an air
plane's whirring over their heads.
She looks up, cries for Myrtle to
run and springs backward, but too
late!
When Jerry canfe to she found
herself held in strong arms and
an unfamiliar but kindly face was
watching hers with concern. She
tried to get up, but her head hurt.
Jerry manages to get up and says
she Is not In need of the doctor
that Dan Harvey sas he Is going
for. Jerry learns that the plane is
not seriously damaged and that it
owned by young Alester Carstalrs
the other member of their Infor
mal callers, who apologizes for
wrecking their camp and promises
to replace everything.
NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY
CHAPTER HI
"Thank you," Jerry said very
quietly, looking at Alester.
Dan Harvey turned abruptly
away. He started toward the car in
which he had brought Dr. Beldon
to the scene. Half way to It he
hailed and came back for a word
with Myrtle. v
"I was piloting the ship." he
said, "and I'll be glad to pay for
the damage to your tent and
things. I'll come hack after I've
taken Dr. BWden to his -office and
heln you get fixed up for the
nipht."
Myrtle looked about her. "flee,
where'll we sleep? This tent's torn
to nieces."
"We'll rig up a shelter for you.
on the porch," Pan offered. "And
tomorrow, if you care to go to
town with me. 111 replace the
tli in it 3 that were destroyed."
"That won't be necessary, Ales
ter broke in. "Let tts know what
the damage Is and we'll pay It but
I think you snd Miss itav will be
more comfortable In the house."
Jerry saw Inn throw him a
glance that she was almost certnln
was touched with contempt. But
he made no ronlv bevond n brief.

"All right and strode away.
a
A few minutes later It was ap
parent that nearly everything be
longing to the camp was In ruins.
"Go back to Carmoor and get a
couple of cots, a bridge table or
two, three or four folding chairs,
some lawn seats and anything else
you think these young ladies can
use." Alester instructed the worried-looking
butler.
Jerry listened wide-eyed. Cee,
wasn't he generous? Myrtle was
busy getting their personal belong
ings together. She felt cold in her
damp bathing rn!t. And hungry,
too. She hadn't got farther than a
cheese sandwich when their call
ers dropped from the sky.
"firing along something for thefr
breakfast, too," she heard Alester
telling Marsh. Well, if he was that
considerate he'd probably be glad
to know that they hadn't anything
left ror supper either.
She walked over with firm pur
pose. "And you might pick up a
cold chicken while you're orer
there, Mr. Marsh." Myrtle said
firmly, but quaking a little in awe
of the man. He reminded her un
pleasantly of Mr. Gear, the aiBle
man In the lace department at
Fane's.
Jerry gasped. Mr. Marsh!" Holy
hat, Mr. Carstalrs would think
they were a couple of boobs who'd
never seen a Broadway show in
their lives. Rut all the butlers on
Broadway were named Meadows.
"Never mind. Meadows . . , or
Is It Marsh? We've bad our sup
per," she said nonchalantly.
Myrtle barely suppressed a
squawk as Jerry bent a forbidding
glance upon her. Alester caught
the little byplay. It amused hfm.
"I'm frightfully hungry myself,"
he remarked earnestly. "You might
just collect a little snack for sup
per while you re about It. Marsh,
he added, to Myrtle's satisfaction.
"I'd like to get out of this wet
bathing suit," Myrtle complained a
little later. "Who'd have thought It
would be so cool when the sun
went down?"
"I'll break open a door or win
dow," Alester volunteered; "and
you can dress In the house.
In a few minutes the girls were
making use of an improvised
dressing room in the corner of the
musty living room. Before they
came out, wearing the little high
belted flapper dresses they'd put
on that morning Dan had returned.
He wan engaged in low-voiced
conversation with Alester when
Jerry stepped out on the open
porch. She caught a word of the
latter's Impatient, quick word.
Dan stopped talking as Jerry ap
proached them. She welcomed him
with a smile to make up for her
earlier partiality. "We've already
brokrn into the houpe," ghe said.

"So I see." It was said almost
surlily. Jerry wondered If her first
impression of him hadn't been too
favorable.
"Dan's been reminding me that
there's company at our house to
night," Alester grinned. "He thinks
I ought too home like a good lit
tle boy. But he intends to stay.
He's brought a nice gieat big Iced
watermelon to ingratiate himself."
Jerry saw the melon, and a pile
of paper bags on the ground. It
hadn't been necessary to tell Dan
that they hadn t finished eating,
she mid to herself and Instantly
regretted the admission. Dan Har
vey might be about the best look
ing fellow sheM seen oft the silver
screen, but she wasn't going to fall
for him. Hadn't she always said
she wouldn't be a fool like most
girls?
"That's nice," she said Indiffer
ently and turned away. She won
dered what Dan would think of
her. A moment ago she bad smiled
at him letting herself be natural
and now she was giving him a
cold shoulder. If he was hurt . . .
will, he'd probably hurt a lot of
girls In his time. Good looking fel
lows were careless with their af
fections, j
"If you're staying I won't be1
needed," Dan said to Alester. "I'll
send one of the garage men over
to look after the plane." J
Alester regarded him with open
Irritation. "The plane s all right. !
I'll have Marsh cover the motor
with some of this tent. Telephone
the hangar, however, and tell them
to come over In the morning."
Dan let his eyes seek out Jerry.
"They'll make a lot of noise." he
said to Alester. "It might disturb
the girls. ..." !
"Hello." It was Myrtle. "How
about keeping that promise to
move up into the house?"
"Marsh can do that," Alester put
In curtly.
"But we're all goln to have sup
per, aren't we? Gee, look at that
mlon! -My favorite fruit!"
"Thanks, but I've got to see
about getting the men here to re
pair the plane," Dan said gruffly.
Marsh came, with a chauffeur
and a light truck of furniture. The
latter unloaded the truck while
Marsh laid out the "little snack."
First there were small round
bits of toast that he covered with
tiny black eggs that he took from
a jar. Jerry wondered what it
was. Alester ate his with relish,
dropping a little lemon juice on
the black stuff.
"Don't you like caviar?' he In
quired as Jerry hesitated to eat
any.
Caviar! So this unappetizing
stuff was tt. She'd read of it. "Of
course,' she said taking up a ca
nape, "hut I'm not hungry. Any

way I really like the red better."
That was a good touch, she felt,
remembering that there was a red
variety.
Alester lifted an eyebrow. "Per
haps you would like some pressed
quail?" he asked as Marsh came
to the table with a new dish.
Jerry shook her head. She was
afraid of making a break, as she
said to herself. Her mfnd wasn't
on what sh was doing. Perhaps
she should have urged Dan to stay. 1
She realized that she had drift
ed away on her thoughts when a
sentence of Myrtle's penetrated
hey dreamy withdrawal. "A hun
dred and fifty dollars ought to cov
er everything." was what her
friend had said.
"A hundred and fifty dollars!
I'm sure that can't be enough,"
Alester returned. . "I've never
bought a tent. . . .
"Oh, well, it wasn't a brand new
tent." Myrtle confided. i
The little gyp! Jerry knew what '
that tent had cost. Now he would
think they were a couple of gold I
diggers as well as Ignoramuses.
"I'll bring you a check tomor
row when I come to take Mies Ray
to the doctor's." Alester promised
Myrtle. "And don't be surprised
if we aren t back for dinner. I
don't carry a clock when I'm hav
ing a good time."
