The Water And Fish Bills
What They Will Do , . ,
They will break up the power monopaly in Ore
gon. They will itop exploitation of Oregon's resources
for the benefit of other states.
They will enable the state of Oregon to derive
substantial revenues from hydro-electric develop
mentthus reducing taxation.
They will protect one of Oregon's largest in
dustries salmon packing.
They will preserve Oregon's game fish which pro
vide food and healthful recreation to nearly half
of the state's population.
Thy will justify Oregon's investment of more
than $115,000,000 in roads and highways by at
tracting tourists to this state.
They will assure posterity its rightful share of the
bounties nature provided and of which we are
only trustees.
They will preserve what remains of the power re
sources of the Rogue, Umpqua, Deschutes and
McKenzie rivers until such tune as the state sees
fit to release them for public or private develop
ment. They will serve the interests of irrigation by pre
venting hydro-electri cmonopoly of the waters of
these streams.

STATEMENT OF
PERCY A. WEBB
Republican Candidate for
SHERIFF
TO THE VOTERS OP DOUG
LAS COUNTY:
During this fall there has been
a number of cases of stealing of
domestic livestock, particularly
sheep and turkeys, In the county.
Duo to the use of autoraobMes by
the criminals, no time can ba lost
An investigating these casei and
VunulffgTlown the thieve. For that
reason I have been unable io gi.e

Republican Ucket.
Protection of the livoq, morl
welfare, and property of the citi
zens of Douglas county, both old
nnd younn, rests with the sher
iffs office. The sherif Its also en
trusted with the colleotlc". of
taxes and with the 04vice of all
civil papers pertaining to tho cir
cuit court.
These various duties of the sher
iff's office require special tialng
and experience. My present office
force is selected and trained for
that work. If this force be re
placed, it would necessarily result
in poorer service until the new
force had gained the necessary ex
perience. The' Pacific highway brings Into
our county the hardened, exper
ienced criminal as well as the ama-
fteur. The ability to detect and
apprehend the criminal can be
gained only by experience In that
work. In my one year in the sher
iff's office I have handled over 260
cases of law violations that were
followed by arrest, with ninety
five per cent of convittloua re
puttlng. These cases included
thievery, burglary, arson, moral
oftennes against children, prohi
bition violations, and practically
i. every other type of criminal of-
' fciife.
An officer must know what evi
dence is necessary In criminal
cases. a::d must know bow to se
cure and preserve such evidence.
This knowledge ran come only
from doing Unit work.
Finally, I believe that training
gained by experience, alone can
guarantee protection from the
criminal. No man, no matter how
w filing, can successfully enforce
the. law until he has horned that
you hire a man to work
on your farm or In your place of

office of sheriff who has the re

ren? f urlpg the year since I was ap
pointed to succeed Sheriff Sam
S.armer I have had the actual ex
perience which is absolntely ne
rpssiry to efficient work in the
sheriffs office. Prior to that time
I bad served as iTuty sheriff and
on the police forre. Because of
rrr training In this line of work,
and on th strength of my record
as sheriff for the last year, I can
cnofi.Iontly pledge that. If elected
sheriff on November 6th. I can and
will give Douglas county an effl

i Confidence Promotion campaign
! which waa put on in this city with
excellent results several months I
ago. This campaign, staged by the
iutai iuervliMttta lu alituuUle local
trade by discouraging: raall order
buying and to stop the activities of
itinerant peddlers, waa most suc
cessful. Since the campaign was
put on this city has been practic
ally free from peddlers and agents,
while a decided decrease in mall
order buying has been reported.
The plan was so successful that
numerous other communities have
written asking for details, several
having staged a similar campaign.
The Medfurd merchants have been
having a great deal of trouble in
past years from peddlers, being fac
ed by the same couUttious that
formerly prevailed hi Roseburg.
They have asked Mr. Cully to meot
with them and explain the propo
sition and have arranged a dinner
meeting to be held tonight, at
1 which time he will thoroughly place
the plan before them.
SALE Or DATE
L iHUnn
Since the visltatiou of the Port
land Good Will Caravan, which
made an overnight stop in this
city a short time ago, the Chamber
of Commerce has received a num
ber of orders for boxes of packed
date prunes. About 35 ten and
twenty-five pound boxes have al
rod ay been sent out and more re
quests are coming in almost every
day. Many of the Portland men
have taken it upon themselves to
give samples of the fruit to vari
ous friends, who in turn have plac
(ed orders. An effort U being maue
by the Chamber ot Commerce to
I build up a special market for the
date prunes. They are to be mar
keted as a choice prune, as its
quality and size are such that it
may be used for table 'or confec
tion use. The publicity now being
received as a result of the visit of
the caravan Is proving a great fac
