Hcst, ousted natter., (,f the Fish crwk disert re gion of the l'rniiia miiimml forest, in whose behalf a Jiia.- muting: was hi'ld in this city last Monday iiitfht, and thej iiupe is genera! that the effort to restore them to their for-1 -t bt'nes on a legitimate basis proves successful. Al-1 though these men, veterans of war in their country's be-1 lialf,;l,ear the stigma of jail imprisonment, they are far from criminals at heart. Their only offense lies in the mis guided zeal that led to a clah with the law in an otherwise commendable effort to establish homes for themselves r.rd their families. The most useful and valuable citizens of any vojnnuiuity are the home owners, and as such Davis and Host would be welcome acquisitions to our permanent population.- It is to be regretted that the method by which it is now sought to re-establish them in their former abodes t'nat of having the land involved officially given agricultural classification was not adopted at the beginning, instead of inviting the law's punishment by violating a promise to va cate the premises. Whether this circumstance will preju dice their case in its final adjudication by federal, authori ties remains to be seen. The belief is warranted, however, that they will receive the maximum of favorable considera tton by reason of their war-time which their country should do something of real benefit in return, and especially when it means two more home build ers. That the land which these men seek is primarily of ag ricultural character was asserted at the mass meeting by roen intimately acquainted with it. The fact that it is not so clattsed officially is the other side of the question that will have to be determined upon review at Washington. The f.yoi'g person, unacquainted with the hind and in favor of rriviivc the veterans a fair chance regardless of official re quirements, will tuke the view that they are morally anil richiy'.entitled U any homes they cun maintain suceessfully in such an unproductive and desolate a region us the federal authorities claim the Fish creek desert to be.
