Dr. Hall's defense of football In not based primarily on his love Of the name, nowever, he declares. "Football Is the one great factor lu American colleges and univer sities that arouse a unified emo tional response In all students," he says. "It is the duty of the univer sity to direct the emotional re sponse In all students," he ttaya. It is the duty of the university to direct the emotional responses of the youth along the proiwr chan nels, so that each student de- unliina I In. .luairahlu tt nira nf char acter. The student conies to feel that the football team ts his team, that its actious on the gridiron are his actions, its victories his victories, and its defeats his de feat s. "He comes to fee! that there Ib ulory even hi defeat if the team ..is fought a good fight. Thus that ble emotional quality of ioy- sense ot fair play Is inculcated, ambition u tired, and a host of other emo tional factors aroused." K ac qui agement of football is re garded by Dr. Hall as the surtmt cute for the "blase" attitude of "don't care" often adopted by university students. . Football, as well as other i shirts, sould be kept fieo from any hint of professionalism, Dr. Hall emphatically pointed, out. The divorce problem is "chiefly con fined to those who are outside the pale arid direct direct influence of the church," the House of 1M shops of the Kpiscopal church was told today In a report prepared by a special church commission which has been studying the subject for three yeais. The survey, read by the Rt. Uev. Herman I'axe, bishop of Michigan and chairman of the commission, Requested no change in tlie laws of the church which prohibits the remarriage of persons divorced except innocent parlies in divorces obtained on statutory grounds. Three recommendations looking toward solution of the problem were offered as follows: "Thut our normal schools, col leges, universities and seminaries bo asked to offer more Instruction on the subject of human relation ship, especially on the subject of marriage. j "That the clergy of the church j be urged to plve training for mar- : riage a conspicuous place in their programs. j "That social service conimis- ; sions be asked to give special at- ten tic n to the whole problem of ; marriage and divorce." i The commission asked that It j be continued "with the understand- : lug that it cooperate with other i agencies to secure a scientific i study of the whole subject of mar riage and divorce,' including the study of the moral and religious factors; that the commission study , and report to the next convention first, on the ecclesiastical and t cannon law of this church In re lation to marriage, divorce, and the annulment of marriage and , awennd, to the relation - lu'twecn civil and religious marriage." ' Home Wrecking Causes The report enumerated a nutn- ber of factors which social work-; era have noted as tending to , strain the man-Inge relations- j Anions these were hasty mar riage, (be lack of children, sex tension and the frequent displace- ; tnent of the home as the unit of ' family life. The report said . th.it pome church men felt that the Increase ' tn divorce Is due to the fact that ' the church did not take the "same firm stand that Is taken by t(i Church of Rome in regard to the indissolubility of marriage. Con-' dii ions In Roman Catholic coun tries, however, are by no mean reassuring, and studies of condi-1 tions in this country show that the desertion rate among so-called Ro-1 man Catholics Is deplorably high.'
