Prompted by an article in a stale periodical lending to show excess expenditures throughout the slate for school J purposes, particularly in the rural districts, the Douglas County Taxpayers' league has appointed a committee to in ! Vesligate the situation so far as it relates to this county. An outstanding complaint is that the lack of a uniform J salary scale for teachers precludes a single standard of ser- vice and makes it difficult, if not impossible, for all dis- tricls to administer their sciiool affairs on an equal basis. If this be the case, adjustment is called for, but any changes decided on that contemplated revision of teachers' wages on a downward scale would hardly improve the service or . meet with popular approval. It is generally recognized j that rural school instructors, considering the preparations required of them, the responsibility of their calling, the none too pleasant conditions under which they are frequently re quired to carry on their duties and the limited periods for which they are assured of employment, are not overpaid. Frequently they receive less remuneration for an entire term of educational and citizen-building work than a pugilistic moron gets for a few minutes of mauling. Wc refuse to be lieve that the taxpayers' league commitlco will recommend any slash in salaries. The teachers earn every cent they are paid. Lowering of wages could only result in driving the more efficient ones to other counties holding out the prom ise of higher compensation and leaving Douglas county dis tricts worse off than they may imagine themselves to bo at the present time. If the taxpayers consider their school bills too high, we would suggest agitation in another direc tion. Tackle the state text book commission when its meets again. If that body could be induced to make fewer changes in school books every time it convenes, it would mean far less money out of the school patrons' pockets and perhaps less demand for unwarranted reductions in other items. . o LKT L1NDY ALONE Qaoo Evening Tolks Vou can't Injure An enemy Hatln' him But you can Play hell with Yer own liver, Al Smith was notified today and the aonuvagun accepted. HOOVER PLANS CONFERENCE ON FARM PROBLEM With all the circus tents fixed right. It now was very close to night. The evening show had been called off and all the work was through. "I'm Just as tired as can be,", said C'lowny, "and It seems to me that jumping into bed would be a right smart thing to do."
