Inc.-reveal that more wnip- pet and Willys KulBlit automobiles wore shipped In tne nrst six months of 1928 than In the entire twelve months of 1027. 'Slightly more than 200,000 cars were mar keted by the Toledo manufacturer exceeding the entire output of 171,713 cars for 1927 by a wide margin. June 1928 proved to be Uio larg est June lii thG history of the com pany, total cars shipped being more thun the combined totals for June, 1920, and Juno, 1927. According to fiictory officials, tho demand for the Whippet Six announced in April has always ex ceeded production, while tho re duction In price of tho Willys Knight standard six, now listing under one thousand dollars, great ly stimulated sales in the Bleeve valved cars. Unusually heavy de mand continues for .the Whippet four and six cylinder four-door se dans, which company officials as crlbe partly to tho fact that those models are tho lowest priced tour- door enclosed carB on the market. Mr. Catching Mis an interesting, and enthusiastic story nf Hudson design and construction. "Not since tho introduction of the fa i nous Super-Six Imlunced crankshaft tins Hudson made such iiu advance in engine design as this motor represents," ho said. "The Super-Six principle ..has for 10 years been the envy of design ers and has been as nearly copied aa patents permit; and this newj motor design, win prove equally worthy of imitation, hut It' also is fully protected by patents. 'Tho most Interesting features are: "1. The motor employs unusually high compression for modern power, ami efficiency, yet avoids "spark knock', roughness and tho oilier qualities heretofore thought j unavoidable w:ih tnuii a motor. "2. No special or doped fuels arts necessary or even desirable; the th sign of AUv motor cares for this problem. It. Kuel-energy formerly wasted is lurned into power, (ireutor pow er is developed at nil speeds and particularly at high speeds yet the motor is described as highly economical. ' "4. A degree of smoothness and flexibility is gained which mny ho compared with that of a Hteam en gine. "So Important 1 does Hudson re gard theao results that, it has ap plied for and received basic pat ents on the design and the prin ciples Involved. "Kight now we are demonstrat ing to motorists the superiorities in performance which this wonder ful design makes possible. Thero is just nothing you can ask of an automobile engine In power or per formance which a Hudson won't do. Yet It has the fuel economy of a car much lighter and less power ful. I have et to show this Hudson letter loinninq than! ever mid even greater success Ever since it flashed into the field, Pontine Six has heen a history-making car. And today, Pontine Six is winning even greater success because today's Pontine Si:: in countless ways is a better car than its famous predecessors. Combining the masterly beauty of bodies by Fisher and the as surance of highest quality construction with its numerous notable engineering advance ments, it provides style, comfort, long life and smooth six-cylinder performance, such as never be fore were available at prices as low as $745. POWTIAC:SIX PRODUCT Of GENERAL MOTORS KENOSHA, Wis., July 11. Of tho host of striking , features that have captured the attention of tho public in tho new Nash "4UU ' series, the "twin-ig'nUion," high compression, valve-in-head engines are receiving closest scrutiny and warmest admiration. This typo of motor design Is ex clusive to Nash, and in conjunc tion with Uohnaiile aluminum pis tons ami tho Nash seven-bearing crankshaft, is said to provide an cngino of extraordinary power, flexibility, smoothness, and ex treme economy. "This great step forward in our design may . bo credited as an other engineering triumph," said E. Hv Mccarty, vice-president and director or sales of the Nash Mo tors company, today, In comment ing on the interest shown in the new motor. "Stripped of techni cal language and details of the long struggle that has produced the MUD' motor, it may be said that our engineers have achieved the ultimate degree in the com vrusslon of combustive gases and In their explosion. With those tasks accomplished and correlat ed, they havo also succeeded in giving tho driver of the car com plete and uuilicd control over this super-sensitive and unlimited pow er. Most mo'torisls know that the force which drives the wheels of a motor car is tho explosion of va porized gasoline in the engine cylinder. Gas is compressed by the rising action of the piston. Then it is Ignited by the liring of the spark plug. Exploding, it forces the piston down. The pis ton turns tho crankshaft and this motion Is transmitted through the drive shaft to the rear wheels. It is obvious that the 'power of the car is dependent on the force of the gas explosion. "'1 tils' forco depends on how highly the gas Is compressed be fore it is ignited. In the now Nash engine high compression is accomplished by reducing ; the volume of the compression cham ber to a mlnlmUm, Still greater unlformlly nf Ignition Is etfoctod through tho use of two specially designed spark plugs in each cy linder iitstead of the usuitl one. Moth plugs flro at the same in stant, igniting the compressed gas in each cylinder at two opposite points thus delivering 360 Mashes per second at lop speed. Two separate ignition coils supply these while hot flashes. Thus every rssi'iiiial part of the Nash '40' ignition system has been doubled In efficiency. "The Importance of this double spark could be better realized ff we could see the action of com pressed gus by 'slow motion.' En tering the cylinder during I he compression stroke It eddies much as water does when a bucket Is whirled, t.'pon ignition, there is an Interval between" the tiniy (he gat is ignited by the spark and the time the forco of explo sion reaches the piston. Th ! longer i!. taken these waves of force to reach the piston head, tho less elective I hey become, Willi sparks blazing Inlo the com pressed gas from two opposite points instead of the usual one, the combustion Is much more ra pid and morn uniform. The. re suit Is a smooth flow of increased power. "In the same way, pinclleully all of Hie gas Is utilized; llius fuel w HStae has been reduced in an almost Inappreciable amount, t.s eompaicd ut the single Ignition motor. The result in this Instance is more mites lo the gallon, elim ination ol caibon. and prevention of oil dilution." I'm bile acceptance of the new "too" c'lies has so far exceeded expo rial Ions that full production at the Kfno;ha, Hacine, and Mil waukee plants has failed lo keep up with ciders, according to sales officials. They report over 27, mud orders alieady on hniul for Juty delivery.
