CUT-OFF ROAD TO BE
LET FOR 525,717.50
Tho contract ror the construe
tion of the new section of the
Tiller Trail cut-off road Is to be let
to itust and Company of Portland,
if the county court's aproval Is
given, according to a message re
ceived today from the state high
way department. The project was
recently offered for bids, but all
the proposals were too high, so
the work was readvertlsed, the sec
tion being made one mile Bhorter.
fhe bid of itust and Company for
tills section was 125.717.60. The
llureau of Public (loads recom
mended that this bid be accented,
and the contract will probably he
let to that firm. The county court
is required to concur In the agree
ment but will undoubtedly accent
the bureau's recommendation. It Is
expected that work will sturt lin
mediately.

ANCIENT BEE TREE
' MASONIC CEMETERY
REMOVED TODAY
The old bee tree in the Alasonlo
reinetery is no more. The true
has for ninny years been one of
the sights of Hie cemetery, the
spreading black oak being of
great size and custlng a shade
over a largo area.
" In recent years the core" litis'
become rotten, due partly to an
imal demy, augmented bv the on.
oral Ion of a swarm or w ild hoes
operallng inslilo the hollow trunk.
Yesterday one whole side of ihe
tree split off mid fell, dropping in
to a section where 1 here were
many costly gravestones, marking
the resting places of some of Iho
county's pioneers.
In some, which seems almost
miraculous, thc tons of crashing
wood, despite tho fact that the
branches covered a wide area, did
not Injure 11 single stone or cause
any damage of liny kind.
I'enrlng Hint the other hair of
the tree might full, the carolnk
ors are today removing the re
maining perilous of the oak, so
that no damnge will result.
The bees Hint have lone neen.

porlion for a number of hours, but
