the boys of '61VG5 reminds us unpleasantly that time has
taken heavy toll from their ranks and that within a few
years hence very few, if any, will be living. A bettcrMdea
of how j'apidly the veterans of the Civil War are answering
the final roll call is gleaned from the official announcement
that in March last the number of pensioners from that war
in various parts of the world totalled 79,300, as against the
highest mark of 715i822, in the year. 1898. Every surviv
ing pensioner is now over 80 years of age. That nearly 80;
000 of .them are still with us attests the sturdiness of the
men who offered their lives at Gettysburg, Shiloh, Antietam,
The Wilderness and on scores of other bloody fields and on
the ocean. The few that are still left to us, in the winter of
life, are richly entitled to all the financial aid extended to
them b a grateful government and to the maximum of per
sonal comfort accorded cither by loving kin or in well-directed
institutions. If this is to be the last of their state re
unions a prediction which we hope proves erroneous it is
fitting that it be held in the city where the state main
tains a home for their care in their declining days. And
Roscburg should take special pains to spe that nothing is
lacking to make the visiting veterans thoroughly comfort
able during their stay. Little is- left to them save the mem
ories bitter and sweet of a lifetime of useful service and var
ied experiences. It would bo to Roseburg's everlasting credit
to make the stay of the old soldiers here of such a nature
that it would make another entry in their mental record of
pleasant recollections. It must not bo otherwise and we are
sure it'. won't be, Let there be. "flowers to the living" in
the forms of both word and deed and given without stint
to these snowy haired veterans who have so greatly honored
us with their presence.
