parted soon afterward. There was
no more discussion of money, of
Oliver, or of their own lutuie.
The thought that Virginia's com-
lng trip would be an answer to all
those ihlugs was uppermost in the
minds of both. There was no need
to talk ii bout the past.
Virginia knew that her fate
I would be definitely settled before
jher return as far as Frederick
i Dean was concerned in it, and Na
jthuniel thought that it would at
ford Virginia an opportunity to
break olt with him without a fuaa
if that was what she wanted.
It was a turning point In their
lives, they knew, and they ap
proached It with white-lipped
pain whon there was no-one to ob
serve its tifiuet.
The steel ot pride kept a mock
smile on their faces when they
were together and neither guessed
what thu other was suffering.
Virginia's boat sailed at noon
one hleuk day in November and
Nathaniel was not present to bid
her furewell. Ho hud purposely
gone out of town to avoid this mo
ment. To Virginia it was a ges
ture of callousness.
Itul that night, after she had
done her best to bo an ideal hos
tess site admitted in a moaning
whisper to her pillow that she
couldn't have endured the parting
If Niel had como to the boat.
She spent a sleepless night and
appeared on deck Ihe next morn
ing looking pale and exhausted.
I There were few to comment up-
on her appearance, howevor, and
those who did take notice account
ed it a result of tho gale they had
run into,
Virginia received their chaffing
good naturedly and permitted
them to believe she had suffered
from seasickness.
She was very busy that morn
ing, conscientiously trying to be
iiuuiiui in nur unties. js so many

AND HER BUDDIES
of the ship turned to her for in
structions whether or not it lay
in her line of duty to advise and
assist them.

for tales of woe that -they cons Id

ed Virginia to smile,
Trouble with servants! Trouble
with obesity! Trouble with the
sources of supply and what vlie
stuff it was when you got it!
Virginia listened politely but al
ways got away as soon as sho
could. She was grateful at tho.te
times for her many and varied
duties that afforded her pretexts
for excusing herself.

In tho harbor a few days longer
than the itinerary called for and
spoke of asking the captain to
make the change.
Haiti would bo their next stop.
Any unnecessary delay in getting
there would he unbearable, for
Virginia. Her limit of endurance
was already reached by the extra
demands made upon her timo and
strength whio they were in
Havana.
On tho last night in port thero
was a roof dinner given to the
captain. The guest of honor
showed a decided disposition to
monopolize the attentions of the
ships hostess and so Virginia
found herself compelled to danco

might have been perfect on a

But it Tilled her heart with sad

was fashioned for romance.
If only she could close her eyes

and tho illusion, If it had existed,

It was a very gay crowd, except
for those who had walked too

I " The roof ws.a garden of palms
and flowers and the delicately-col
ored buildings of the city below
stretched out to a moon-shimmering
sea like a water color paint
lng.
The beautiful evening dresses
the women wore and the while
dress suits the men had donned
were in perfect harmony with the
scene, but Vlrgiuia wished she
could aland a moment at the
parapet and be alone with the
spirit of beauty that hovered over
the city.
There was laughter; there wer3
toasts, storfes and music.
And rar away, under s cold
northern sky, a man tramped lor
miles and miles In a great city n
midlown park and thought of a
ship at sea with a girl whose heart
was laid down in worship at the
feet of Mammon.
And It whs all so futile, he
thought. For what could she buy
to match the jewels ot the sky?
Gems were only to look at. Why
did men lay down their lives to
acquire precious stones when they
had but to walk out into the night
aim iook upward to see the great
est gem collection human eyoo
could behold?
And a daiBy In a window box

than orchldB or rosea to misery,
Nathaniel knew. He was unable
to bellove that a mortal could be
happy who loved material things
more than his soul, nnd anyone
who thought he could was due to
mako a sad discovery, he added in
his mind.
"if I'd lost her becnuso sho lov

had cost him dearly to discover.
as ho bolieved ho had, that Vir
ginia lacked appreciation of her
soul. She had been a shining light
of truth and beauty to him, an in
spiration, and now sho had turn
ed his heart to a lump of mud.
His mural work was sliffeniu.
The face of his central figure was
taking on a hard, worldly expres
sion that Nathaniel , knew would
ruin him if he could not corroct it.
And ho could not.
He was working now on a con
