Virginia Brewster Is in love with
an artist, Nathaniel Danu, but she
is tricked into promising to -marry
Frederick Dean in one year if she
fails to earn flOO.000 that he al
leges bur, father cheated him out
of.
Brewster had lost his fortune
before his death and Virginia is
left destitute.
She puwna some of her jewelry
and Oliver Cutter promises to in
vest the money for her. She seeks
work, but without success. She dis
covers that she is being shadowed
and suspects that Dean has bribed
the agencies not to help her, Oli
ver suing her confidence and
shows her attentions which Nlel
resents, but then Virginia does not
like the familiarity with which bis
model, Cblri, treats him.
She Is lucky enough to not a po
sition which she likes. Tbe sum
mer passes and in early Soptein-
ber sbo Is amased when charged
by Cutler's wife with trying to
alienate bis affections.
She appeals to Oliver to explain.
and demands an accounting ot her
iuvestments. Then he confesses
that he has not made a penny for
her, but that he Is madly infatuat
ed with Iter and will gladly glvo
her the hundred thousand it she
will go away v, lth him.
She denounces his knavery, and
leaves, taking his secretary with
her aB her company needs another
assistant. She is asked to go on a
six-weeks cruise as bostoss, hut be
fore deciding she goes to seo Niel
at his studio. His model greets her.
NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY
CHAPTER XXXIX .
Ohiri came out of the kitchen
ette holding a pan In which she
ns vigorously stirring a white
sauce.
Oh. It's you." she said flatly
when she saw Virginia. "I thought
It was Nlel. He generally comes In
with, so many, bundles bo can't
onen the door."
Unconsciously Virginia raiseu
her eyebrows in surprise, but Chlri i
seemed not to notice it. ''I suppose
you are having diuner with us,, 1
se went on and turned bank to the
kUchonetto. "Nlel will be In soon,"
she addod over her shoulder.
Virginia was surprised at her ,
oool assumption of authority In
Nlel'8 home. But she would not
strike back and allow Chill to see
that she was annoyed. Instead she
pulled off her hat and said some
thing about nelug glsu tney were
eating in.
I'm so tired of restaurants," sho
volunteered through the open
door. "Nice .of you to get up a meal
here." ,
Chlri. out of sight, slammed the
pan back on .the stove and turned
un the flume.
She had uoino In half an hour
earlier than Virginia, and finding
the studio empty, had " conceived

surprise for Nathaniel. 'She knew,
of course, that he always had the
evening meal, with Virginia, but
she bad hoped to coax, him to stay
when be found everything ready in
ttie studio. -
That Virginia would drop in or
Nathaniel would telephone for ber
Chili kuew well euough. Her re
ception ot Virginia was premedi
tated and planned In the evont
that she arrived before Natbaniel.
Chlri had guessed It was not be
at the door aud. her atlumpt to
make Virginia fuel like one too
many was deliberately a port ot
ber 6Chume. Virginia's poise and
courteous retort infuriated her.
Out iu the other room Virginia
herself was disturbed, though Bhe
did not display any outward sin'us
of beiug so. She look a seat near
the fireplace in which Chlri had
set a few small pieces ot wood
blazing for the sake of cheerful
ness. The night was mild and the
windows swung open to a suit
breeze. Virginia could sea a patch
of supphtre sky above the old brick
houses on the opposite side ot the
narrow street,
What a lovely night It was!
Struuge that your heart could ache
so when there w as love in the
world and a Bky like that to walk
under! Virginia leaned her head
back against the old Italian chuir
and closed her eyes.
Why was Chlri here? Nathaniel
always had seemed to treasure this
hour when they could be together.
Never bad ho been willing to 'share
it with a third person before.
So thorough had . been Chlrl'B
domination of the situation that it
did not occur to Virginia to guess
that the girl was Intruding.' Sho
believed, without question, that
Nathaniel had asked her here,
And Chili's drawling, "I suppose
you are having diuner with us,
smarted not a little. Had Na
thaniel, then, not told Chirl he ex
pected her? That other remark,
about the bundles, hurt, too. She
had understood that Nathaniel wns
not seeing much ot Chirl. The girl's
remark gave a distinctly different
impression.
But Nathaniel did not coma in
laden with bundles at dinner time,;
Virginia knew. He was Willi her j
usually at that hour.i Unless, per
haps, Chlri w as in thu habit ot I
eating here when Nulhanlol apd
Virginia met uptown. On Hiobb oo
casiona Nathaniel might have
brought the food tn for her.
Virginia asked herself why he
would not have mentioned It If the
sltuutlon stood ns she had con
ceived It. Yet she wub compelled
to admit that Nathaniel might have
felt the same way about it as she
did In regard to bor relations with
Oliver.
Sho flinched a little as the
thought came to her that Nutlmnlol
probably believed she would be
jealous. But why should Chlri want
to dine hero alone? Surely she was
not a person to find her own com-

Virginia ooncluded that Chirl
must have referred to other hours
of the day. Lunch time perhaps.
It might even be breakfast, consid
ering Chill's complete lack ot re
gard for worldly conventions. She
knew enough about Chirl to invest
her with daring euough to rush In
to Nathaniel's studio in any sort
of morning garb black silk pa
jamas most likely and order him
out to buy the groceries.
Virginia tried to turn ber nilud
from the whole tiling, feeling
wouuded and somehow cheapened
by the preseuce ot this girl who
made herself so much at home in
Nathaniel s studio.
The uroblem ot her future need
ed immediate attention and Vir
ginia sought to occupy ber
thoughts with It to the exclusion or
everything else. She succeeded On
ly in realizing that the outlook was
black indeed black as the heart ot
the man who held her loyally like
a sword over her head. -
She oould bear Chirl stilling
round In the liny kitchen, a noisy
cook, humming a naughty Utile
French chanson.
"Sho Is very much at home," Bho
thought wistfully. "I suppose Nlel
likes to have someone around him
who Is happy. I'm not so sure that
a man doesn't prefer a cheerful
coiutianlon to a loving one."
It was in tier nitnu mat sne
would be incapable of slngiug in
his kitchen. Was Chirl. afler all,
the superior person ot the two?
"She loves Nlel," she thought as
she tried to make a comparison of
horself and the model. "1 know sho
does. Yet sho Blngs. There must
lie something fine aud strong about
her, in spile ot her gamin ways."
For the first time since she bad
known Chlri, Virginia felt a touch
of sympathy for her. Her displeas
ure had meltod, lost iu the deep
worry that wolghed upou her.
Her spliitB sank lower and lower
as the flames died in the grate and
Nathaniel did not conto. The false
courage sho had buoyed her hopes
with all afternoon vanished In the
growing darkness of the studio,
How long before Chlri came In
and put a match to the tapers on
the table she had laid for dinner
Virginia did not know, but when
the room -became shadowy with
eandleglow she knew at least that
one decision waB definitely made.
Nathaniel should be spared ui
much as sho could spare him. And
another woman would liavo her
chance. i .
I "I'll take tlio trip on the Agoiia,
Virginia told herself, "ami glvo
Chlri the field, Sho may find a wuy
into Niel's love. Then, If 1 must
keep my burgaln with Frederick
Dean, his heart will not be broken
One is enough. Better that he and
Chirl should be happy than that
all three of us should sutler.
There was one bright anglo In
regard to her decision, 'one that
gave her a shred ot comfort, If for
tuno should by chance favor bel
aud she found a way to froe her
self from Frederick Dean alio
would know beyond the sIlKhloHt
question of doubt that Niel's love
was hers . . . that is, if Chlri, hav

it was something to bug to ber
sorely-troubled heart and Virginia

could give Nathaniel in case Bhe
lost to Dean the chance of falling
in love with a girl whose soul was
pot iu pawi).
Nathaniel found ber auimated
and sparkling like bur old self
when be cuius lu a few minutes
later. He was Inclined to resent
Chiri's presence, but Virginia's:
lively conversation aud ready ac-

Virginia woudered what he

uo opportunity to tell bur. It be
had asked Chirl to prepare the din
ner, as she believed, Virginia did
not care to huve him explain. But
If he had not sho did not want hliu
to quarrel with Hie girl over It.
Finally, when they were sipping
Chiri's strong black coffee from
thinible-sizu cups, Virginia told
them o( tbe Ageua'a southern
cruise.
"It was splendid of Mr, Welkins'
to choose me as hostess, she add
ed, with well simulated elation.
Sho studiuusly avoided luoktng at
Nathaniel as she spoke, But from
her lowered eyes she could Bee his
lean brown fingers suddenly crush
the clgaret be hail reached for. -
No one spoke for a few seconds
that hold the count ot minutes fur
the group. At lust; "Virginia, you
aren't going?" from Nutliuniol, In
stricken unbelief.
Virginia did not hesitate. "Why
of course, I ami" Bhe said firmly.
I wouldn t miss It tor tho world.
Think ot getting away from New
York for the winter. The Bunimor
has been dreadful, but when tho
slush is piled up knee high I can't

She risked a glance now, fonrful
lest sho over-act. But Nathaniel's
expression satisfied her that ho be
lieved Bho was in earnest.
He could not argue with her- In
Chiri's presence, and Virginia lln
gored lung after she knew that ho
wanted her to leave so that he
could take her home and tulk it
out
Chirl Ignored several woll-dlreot-

ure, but Bho was as resolved to
slay as Virginia. When lateness at
last compelled Virginia to go she
put. an abrupt end to Nathaniels
pleading as soon ns ho began,
"Don't bo selfish, Nlel," sho said
brusquely; mid whatever Nullianiel
had meant to say he lucked In his
mind instead,
There was no drawn-out good
night between them at her hotel
on this occasion and Nntliunlel re
turned to his studio with all his
sensibilities us full of darts as
Spanish bull after an encounter
with a picador.
Chirl was waiting to apply salvo
to the wounds.
"Poor you," sho said 'mockingly
"1 told you she'd never stand up to
this kind of life," she added, wav
ing a carelessly manicured hand to
designate tho dim Bludio.
