MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., June 15.
Favorable results in the treat
ment of infantile paralysis by a
serum made from the blood of con
valescent patients were reported
to the American Medical associa
tion today by Dr. W. Lloyd Ay
cock of Boston.
In a group of 106' persons who
received the serum within the first
four days of Illness the physician
said tho're had been a low mor
tality rate, a low average of paral
ysis and a "strlnklngly jmall" oc
current of tho severe' grades of
paralysis.
. Only One Death
. Only one chiUl In the group died,
and whereas 64 per cent subse
quently developed the disease only
5.7 per cent had the severe type as
compnrd with 16 In a group of un
treated cases. The amount and
severity of parnlyBls, Dr. Aycock
said, ;varled with tho interval be
tween the onset of the disease and
the time the serum was admin
istered.' . '.

HospitalB Urged
Dr. Archer O'ltellly of St. Louis,
chairman of the section on ortho
pedic surgery, urged establishment
of convalescent hospitals for crip
pled adults, for whose care there
are virtually no facilities. He
pointed out that it cost about $235
to rehabilitate a crippled person
and from J300 to 8500 annually to
maintain one unable . to work.
Fifty thousaud cripples are being
added t6 tho list of invalids this
year, Dr. O'Reilly asserted.
"A consideration of the figures
quoted," he added, "will show that
not only humanitarian motives but
plso economic principles justify
the establishment of ndequatehos
pilals, manned by expert staffs, de
voted to the , treatment of the
adult cripple."
Dr. Y;illnrd C. Stoncr of Clove-,
land, speaking before the section
on practice of medicine, said that
treatment for chronic rheumatism
was larcely unsatisfactory even in
some nt Hie best clinics. The wide-
spread occurrence of the disease reading of the instructions which
and the tendency lo invalidism so- j accompany it will give you inanv
companying it niako rheumatism useful hints ns to ils economical

In connection whh the Hotpolnt
Electric Huiiko Canipaign now un-i
jder way, The Cnlilcrnia OroRou I
1 Power company is releasing a tier- I
iea of interesting articles by noted
authorities on the subject of "elec
tric cookery" which should prove
helpful to all local housewives.
These items will appear in this
paper every week until the close
of the campaign, the first of tho
Berles being reproduced herewith:
USING THE ELECTRIC RANGE
TO THE BEST ADVANTAGE
By Mrs. P. K. Dunning.
(Home Sconomlcs Delnirtmunt, tho
Society for Electrical De
velopment) There seems to be no doubt In
anybody's mind but that electri
city constitutes the Ideal cooki:i;;
fuel. " Every woman, who has ever
used a waffle iron or u toaster or
a grill knows the cooking by elec
tricity is tho coolest, most con
venient and most satisfactory way
in which to cook. But there does
seem lo be some doubt as lo the
practicability of doing all the cook
ing for tho family by electricity.
And this state of uncertainty is
no doubt depriving many women
of the blessing of having an elec
tric range in her kitchen. This is
really too bad, especially now lluit
warm weather is coming on and
the pleasuntness and livablllty of
a kitchen in . which an electric
range does ' the work would moan
so much in added health and hap
piness to tho home maker.
Electricity on a Dollar Basis
Probably the first and largest
barrier between tho average wo
man and an electric range is the
fear that tit cost of opratlon would
be very great. Now, speaking
from a strictly dollars' and cents'
standpoint, it is generally conced
ed that where the cost of electric
i current for cooking is five cents
or less per kilowatt hour, condi
tions are favorable for the use of
electricity. However, If the local
rates for other cooking fuels are
approximately high, electricity v.itl
then compare favorably on a high
er cost basis.
In considering the electric range
from the standpoint of economy,
; you want to realise that a little in
telligence applied to' its operation
will materially IcBuen Its current
consumption. This . is true, of
course, In respect to any range,
but especially truo of an oiectric
one. ' t
If you choose a range of gooil
quality, inaile by a reliable mumi-
i lucturer, it will have a very high
efficiency, and a eooi! Uuirmieh
tacturers are written by
iipmile
who thoroughly understand ths
ranges, and really know how the'
Bhould be UBed to gel the best re
sults from them. Follow theso in
structions al least until you can
prove to yourself that you liavo
discovered a belter method of pro
cedure It is, of course, impossible to
glvo horo any blanket Instructions
for the detailed .operation of all
ranges, but I hero are a few gener
al points you will do well to re
member. First, always use nuns which
completely cover the heating ele
ment when using tho top stove
units. Theso pans should be shal
low and equipped with iiciu-.H.
ting lids. When cooking two or
uireo lllings nt once, use ln1.1l.
calo or triplicate sets of saucepans
and set them over one element.
And always turn off the current a
few minutes before the cooking
process is completed, so that the
food may finish cooking on the re
tained heat.
Electric ovens are so well In
sulated thai the current may bo
turnod , off approximately one
hour before the termination of tho
cooking time. This applies, now
over, only to long, siw cookine
process. Baking a 11 d roasting
Bhould be done with I he c urrent
on, up to within 15 minutes of re
moving tile rood from the oven
Always turn your heat from
High" lo "Low" or "Medium '
once the boiling point has been
reached. "l.ow" will maintain
boiling temperature under ordin
ary uiinosphenc conditions and
uses only one-fourth ns much cur
rent us "High."
When having a rnst for dinner
plan to have vegetables and 11 )...'
sert which' can alto lie cooked In
the oven.
Don't boll great quantities of wa
ter when you need only a little
aim especially don't drown your
vegetables in water.

'i ins suit is brought for the pur

raised regarding the city's airport
bonds, recently authorized at a
Bpecial election.
The purchasers of the bonds '
questioned the right of the city to 1
issue them, claiming that no court '
has ever designated an airport as '
beiug for public benefit. While it is I
believed that no court will rule '
that an airport Is less of a public
purpose than a street or other
thoroughfare, particularly in view
of the recent progress- of aviation, '
yet the fact remains that no court
has done so and so this question,
purely a technical one, was raised.
. In filing suit ugaliiBt the city
Mr. McCllntock, a taxpayer, claims
that the city Is proposing to issue1
these bends, which will he paid by
