National Guard Notes
The recruiting contest botycen

added to the company rooster the
past week. The second platoon now
leads by three men. The first pla
toon says, "wait until the final
count."
- Captain Mars tern has promised a
big feed to the platoon winning the
contest, which is to be served by
the losing one.
The Interest in the summer camp
and training period is increasing
as the time draws near for en
campment Camp Clatsop is located
between Seaside and Astoria and Is
an ideal place for such training.
The company leaves Hoseburg the
night of June 12ih.

ditions or enlistments to the com-
pauy. IC the present rate of new
' members continues for a few days
more a waiting list will be neces--sary.
Sunday morning was spent on
the government range east of town.
Pistol shooting and practice was
the order of the day. Every man
attending was allowed to shoot sev
eral times and some very good
marksmanship was displayed.
Shooting on the range wili be car
ried on every Sunday morning from
the present lime until camp time.
It is the desire of the company
officers to qualify as many men as
possible before camp. The fli-Ht
qualification in pistol shooting is a
mark of tit) per cent of the possible
score.
, The National Guard baseball
team is coming In fine shape. The
first game was lost due largely to
lack of previous practice. The
boys are very much interested in
having a .first class team and prac
tice has been the order every night
lust week. Some of the best ma
terial in town is available for this
team. Among the men playing are
Jost, Jarvis, Hutham, Ogle, Lea,
Walton, DeRoss, Frederick son, Ger
retsen, Mur&tcrs Keislur and l)o
lan. The new men Joining the com
pany are Ashley Tabor, Frank
Franco, Wni. Powers, Hudolph
Heiden, Chas. E. Coales, Kenneth
P. Lawson, Wallace Horner, Chas.
Brown, Raymond E. Pearson. The
following men have been transfer
red to the National Guard Reserve,
due to having moved from the
military district of .Roseburg: Ed
die S. Hall, Carl A. Brandt, Chas.
h. Pitts, Loroy Hall and lien Ellis.
High school men are especially

MINING SWINDLE
ALLEGED AGAINST
'5 INDICTED MEN
PORTLAND, Ore., May 8.
Charged with using the malls to
defraud through mine stock sell
ing, five men have been indicted
by the federal grand jury here.
Following arrest ot Dr. H. P. Col
lins, at Phoenix, Ariz., federal
officers today divulged the names
of the other men involved in the
case. They are:
W. C. Gtmrher, present of the
Kings Food Products comvnny; E.
R. Anderson, of Vancouver, Wash.,
A. E. Downing- a civil engineer,
William O. Ruess, of Bunker Hill,
Ariz., and Dr. Collins.

ing were arrested today. HuesB is
being sought by federal officers.
The indictment charged that the
promoters used an alluring circu
lar promising wealth to investors
who bought shares in a mine near
Las d uces N. M., whoso value was
misrepresented. Assistant United

E. Littlcfleld said that 200 indivi
dual sales of stocks had been trac
ed and that among the owners
wero widows, school teachers,
working girls and business people
or all walks of life.

asked in a resolution presented to
the secretary of the quadrennial
general conference of the Metho
dist Episcopal church here today
by the Rev. Ray Allen of Cornell,
N. Y., and signed by nearly 50 of
the church's most prominent edu
cational leaders and editors.
GARDEN CLUB HOLDS
INTERESTING MEETING
The Roseburg garden club held a
very interesting meeting last
night with a large attendance. Con
siderable attention has been given
the matter of selecting a flower
for the city, and at last night's
meeting the Garden club went 'on
record, as adopting the Hoosler
Beauty ioo as tlie city's official
flower. It was also decided to give
assistance during the Business and
Professional Women's club by fur
nlshlng flowers for the visitors and
the various events that are to be
made a part of that meeting.
Ah interesting talk was given by
Mrs. S. D. Evans, who spoke on
the subject of wild flowers. .Merle
Austin, of The Fern, Florists,
spoke on cultivation of annuals
and perenlals.

Roseburg aviation bonds which

Ruckles Foik Leaving
Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Tucker of
Ruckles are leaving at the end of
the week for eastern Oregon to re
side. Mrs. Tucker was a, visitor
here yesterday while making ar
rangements for final disposing of
effects. They will make their home
near Pendleton. Mr, and Mrs.
Tucker came to Douglas county
last fall.
Climb Mt. Scott
A group of Rosehurgers, Includ
ing Gene Shriim, Margaret Cam
Florence Snedaker and Florence
and Eita Casoheer and Ellen
Shrum of Glide, formed a party
Sunday and climbed Mt. Seoit.
From Lone Rock they hiked up the
mountain trail. Mt. Scott was
topped with snow but none was
found on the lower plats of the
mountain. Orchids In profusion
were found and the rhododendrons
will not be out for another month,
as the buds are just , now forming,
the party reports.

at the O. W. Turner home near

Dr. Bailey Home From Dututh
Dr. C. H. Bailey of South Deer
Creek and editor of the State
Grange Bulletin, returned home
the first of the week after a trip
to Duluth, Minnesota, where he
was called by the sudden dath of
a sister. The funeral was held
Monday of last week and all the
members of the family wre pres
ent. While away Dr. Bailey took a
trip with relatives twenty miles
above Duluth lo some of Ihe lakes
which, he states, were frozen solid.

charged with being drunk while at
a dance at Rice Hill last Saturday
night. He was arrested by .Deputy

Hopkins sentenced him to 10 days
in jail and a fine of $25.

was arrested yesterday morning
charged with reckless driving, ap

grew out of an accident Sunday

Shockley, who played I'The Wators
of Minnetonka" ' and au encore
number.
The Kiwanls club went on rec
ord as pledging support to the Busi
ness and Professional Women's
club in connection with the coming
state convention of that organiza
tion. A vote of thanks was taken
expressing the club's appreciation
of the cooperation of the Kiks
lodge, Hoseburg Country club, and
the Chamber of Commerce In the
divisional conference held here Sat
