Leaving Rome, the Italia flew to
Germany, from where Noble will
fly to King's Hay, Spitsbergen,
making one enroiite stop in Itns
sia. ,.
A base is being established at
Spitsbergen and from this the
Italia plans to make at least three
cruises into the Arctic and return.
The first ot these flights will be
to explore areas on the northern
end of Siberia; the second, to ex
.jilore areas on tlio American archi
pelago and the third Is to be a
flight over the pole Itself. It condi
tions are favorable, Nobiie plans
to land nt the pole and camp there
for several days. Tents and stores
are carried aboard the airship.
The flights from Spitsbergen,
due to begin early in May, are ex
pected to .require about two
months.
At Spitzbergen a number of Ital
ian scientists will be quartered on
the Italian ship, City of Milan, an
ice crusher furnished by the Hal
Ian .government They will record
and study scientific data gathered
by Nohlle on his flights.
Prof, Amedo Nobiie, the gener
al's brother, will remain on the
base ship, In charge of the corps
of scientists.
Accompanying General Nobiie on
the ltalla's polar flights will he 10
men, many of whom were with him
on the Norge. Captains AdalberJ.0
Mariano and Fililpo Zappl' and
Lieutenant Alfredo Viglieri ot the
Italian navy will have charge ''df
the navigation of the itaiia. Gen
eral Nobiie will look after the air
ship's motors with the assistance
ot four mechanics. Prof. Adlo Pon
tremoil will have charge of the
scientific observation aboard the
aircraft.
The Itaiia wili be in constant-radio
communication with Home
messages being relayed by the
City of Milan at Spitzbergen.
