was augmented by $5,020 interest. Out of the grand total
of $1,476,660.00, the sum of $425,580.71 was distributed to
school and road districts, to the Port of Umptiua and for
some general county expenses. An obligation of $19,
591.08 to the state highway commission was discharged,
$28,932.25 liquidated certain bonds and $200,000 was trans
ferred to the fund for the projected new court house, for
,vhich tho total sum of $271,190.06 is now available. The
largest of all itemized disbursements was $802,555.92, a
transfer to the fund for meeting outstanding general indeb
tedness bonds, which total nearly twice that sum. This
transfer does not mean, however, that a corresponding
amount of bonds was actually paid off. The bonds were
not presented for payment because they had not reached
maturity and tho holders declined to part with them in ad
vance unless allowed a premium, which they are not apt
to receive. In past years, so it is stated, holdors' of county
bonds and warrants were eager rather than reluctant to

ever, with the county's financial situation so greatly im

fine sens of humor he was an out

among the most brilliant company.
Yet ho was equally at ease with
the humbloat of mankind; unmind
ful of race, creed or color. To him
all were alike creatures of the samo

will probably go to the supreme court of the United States
for final adjudication. Victory for the state would mean
that. Douglas county would have to. surrender about $325,-'
