to progressivencss, which does not have an airport, is tak-
ing steps to establish one and many of those already hav
ing one are finding it necessary to enlarge it or otherwise
improve it to accomodate aviation's growing requirements.
Are not these facts alone enough to set aside whatever
doubts still linger as to the wisdom of the majority's ver
dict in yesterday's election? It is safe to assert that mjihy
if not most of the citizens who opposed the bond issue con
ceded th'e desirability of an airport but doubted if the city
could afford one. Those who supported the project realized
the truth that Roseburg could not afford to be without one.
Of course, as usual, some oncosition was based either on iir-
r i il . i ; e i iu uuuii. ui tuu mci it ut luu moat
uuruiiue.m lacis or uiu au.iuiite ui any piuiiuau ui pciauiuu vUu 1)alt of all the rBctor8 bear
ing upon the successful production
ot any crop. There is no crop
where this important truth carries
more weight than with the culture
ot broccoli.
A large number of growers to- I
nether with the writer realized a
number of years ago that steps
should' be taken to Insure- the broc-
coll growers a reasonable supply
of certified seed.
This was accomplished lv test
plots In where a lurge number of
strains were grown. This work re
sulted In the elimination of a num
ber of strains having undesirable
traits. While this work was a steD'
forward we all agreed that the
Ideal would be to produce local
seed under the direction of a
gain, save what might be derived through general munici
pal benefit. For the most part, however, opposition was oc
casioned by honest difference of opinion. Fortunately the
future holds in store the happy contrast of impartial enjoy
ment of benefits ;' for everybody will have an equal opportun
ity to share in the augmented prosperity contributed throupji
direct touch with air transportation. With this prospect
ahead, whatever ill feeling might have developed during the
pre-election campaign should be thrust aside as Soon as pos
sible. Let us keep uppermost in mind the thought that
we should all work together for the general good of the city.
...An election always engenders sharp contrasts in personal
views and occasionally pardonable bickerings. At heart,
, however, every citizen wants his town' to forgo ahead and it
will go ahead all the faster if as many as possible work to
, ''gethor. This is Roseburg's convention year, a strawberry
carnival is coming and we should present a united and chcer-
ful front to nil guests. In passing let us not neglect to give
a vote of thanks to Umpqua.Post of the American Legion,
to whose initiative and spirit the success of the election is
duo. It used to be said, "Old men for counsel, young men
for action.'1 The counsel of old men was not in evidence in
, the plans for the airport, but what "old" brains were neces
1 sary were supplied by the legionnaires themselves In con
junction with the activity that carried the project to sue
, .cessful fruition at the polls. They have performed a peace
time service of inestimable value to their home city, one that
will form a lasting testimonial to their splendid public spirit
r find one for which the municipality will ever hold them
in grateful remembrance.

Ordinarily, you'd say that a seven-year-old girl would be
better off in her own father's home than in the home of two
vaudeville performers. But consider the case of little Betty
Jane Sellers of Des Moines. Betty Jane's mother died, and
she was given a homo by Mr. and Mrs. Charles LeRoy, van- j
deville performers. She was happy and well cared for. Then
her father remained. He went to the courts and got pos
session of Betty, so he could "give her a father's care." The
result? The authorities have taken her away from him
because ho mistreated her. Great welts were found on her
back where ho had beaten her. You can't generalize about
children and homes. Sometimes two "stage people" can
be kinder and wiser than blood relations.

The Ilarmjon Foundation of New York offers $i!00 in
prizes during the coming year for cartoons on subjects
which make for social and civic betterment. This is a good
idea. A cartoon is often one of the most powerful arguments
that can be presented. It will frequently influence people
that a carefully thought-out editorial or speech could nol
move. Tweed, the famous Tammany boss of New York two
generations ug, was practically driven out of office by
cartoons.

FOR BISHOPRICS
CHICAGO, Mar. 29. Four thou
sand laymen and ministers who
voted informally on a set of ques
tions touching on vital parts of the
Methodist Episcopal church struc
ture, have returned a heavy ma
jority favorable to changing the
present .method of electing bishop
j for life to that of limited tenure.
1 hey agreed, also, by nearly
1,000 votes, that there should be a
restatement of Methodist doctrine,
but the question of whether there
should be a more binding creed
was voted down by a slim majority
of 60.
The questionnaire was sent qut
ny ine isomwestern cmstian Ad
vocate. It was desired, said an an
nouncement accompanying it, to
obtain the sentiment ot the church
as a whole on vital issues which
may come up at the general con
ference in Kansas City May J.
Thumbs were turned down on a
hypothetical proposal to have 'the
church relax I's luws on subsequent
marriage of divorced persons. The
majority against such a proposed
move was 1,493.
