IT WASN'T
A cousin of Mark Twain denies that a Thomas Sawyer
who died the other day in Arizona was the original Tom
Sawyer of Mark Twain's books. "There was no real Tom
Sawyer," says the cousin. "He was a composite character,
more Mark Twain himself, perhaps, than any other indivi
dual, but no particular person." Biographers have come to
the same conclusion. Tom Sawyer was born and raised in
Mark Twain's own soul, and it is useless to try to identify
hint as this or that boyhood chum of his creator. He never
was a flesh and blood individual. Yet today Tom Sawyer,
the figment of Mark Twain's imagination, is far more real
than any of the men and women who grew up in Hannibal,
Mo., half a century ago. He has become immortal; and in
the process he has taken on substance and reality. A cen
tury hence he will bo just as much alive as he is today. Our
children's children will have him for a playmate. That, when
you stop to think about it, is rather amazing. An ex-steamboat
pilot takes pen and paper and writes the story of ;
wholly imaginary character; and long after he himself har
died, this imaginary lad continues to tug at the heartstrings
of boys and girls and men and women just as if he were
' really alive. Tom Sawyer has become eternal; with the dis
reputable Huck Finn he will forever continue to be the des
pair and darling of the perennial Aunt Pollys of this world.
But that is the way this world is built. Ideas are far
more enduring than anything else man can create. They
outlast empires, tall buildings, great dynasties and mighty
cities. Ancient Troy is a rubbish heap and old Ithaca a
name, but Helen still lives. Columbus' fleet has gone on an
everlasting voyage to shadowy seas, but the idea that Col
umbus followed has changed the world's history. We often
think that we live in a materialistic age. To our factories
and office buildings we give the rapt attention the Greeks
gave to white temples. We are highly business-like and ef
ficient; we boast that America is a place for the doer, not
the dreamer. Cut we need not bo too cocksure. Our whole
nation is only the embodiment of the drfeams. dreamed by
Washington, Jefferson and Adams. As a people we are a
living symbol of the permanence of ideas. For our Tom
Sawyers always outlast their creators. It is useless to hunt
for 'their originals. They will not survive -unless they began
as. figments of the imagination. : .

'. A fine of $350, jail imprisonment for 120 days and can
cellation of driver's license for one year, all combined--the
penalty meted to one culprit in Roseburg justice court Tues
day may appear at first like excess punishment for a
single offense, but it was well deserved for the character of
tho' violation, that of driving an automobile on the public
highway whilo undor the influence of intoxicating liquor.
These cases are becoming too frequent in spile of tho un
remitting warfare on their underlying cause bootlegging.
Perhaps the rentence imposed on tho latest offender, accom
panied by the public declaration that all similar violations
will meet with punirfu vjnt fully as severe, may have n
wholesome effect on ultra-thirsty motorists, at least within
the jurisdiction of that magistrate. Fine and jail sentences
may not cure the drink habit, especially as long as liquor is
obtainable, but the throat of revocation of driver's permits
will unquestionably result in the exorcise of more care in tin
Use of the highway. For. this the law-abiding and naturally
careful class of nilloists will be thankful. And especially
grateful they probably are in realizing that for the next
twelve months at least their danger in this locality from be
ing killed or crippled has been reduced by the ban on ono
bbozo addjet. '

-t: Victory in its long fight to secure a deeper and wider
channel to the sea has certainly imbued Portland with en
thusiasm and optimism. On the heels of Secretary of State
Kozer's announcement Unit at the end of this year Oregon
would bo in the "hole" from $1,500,000 to $1,'.)0(),000, Port
land launches a slate-wide campaign with the slogan, "J.el's
Go Ahead, Oregon." That's the spirit that overcomes ob
stacles. -Portland simply refuses to feel "blue " litvnuso tli3
sjnte is in the "red." It's a good example for the re.tt o'
the stale lo follow, but press comment and satire indicate
tfint some localities are not disposed to follow Portland's
luutl. This failure to pull together, chiefly because of .sec
tional jealousy, industrial rivalry or imaginary grievances;
ill impair our progress and contribute to the gain in hfnv
settlers in Washington and California, where they recognize
t)o value of state-wide cooperation and prntic il accord
