Japartruent amazed me but little
I more than the appearance of the
man himself. Ho was rather short,
with sharp, shrewd features; and
what I saw of hlB hair beneath
his- jauntily tipped hut was blaok
und sleek, like the liainted hair on
Ijapanese dolls. I noted, too, that
his evening tie was enlivened by
a design of tiny white forget-me-nots,
and that his shirt front was
ndorned with diamond studs.
The contrast between him and
the immaoulately Btyllsh and 'me
ticulously correct Vance wus ag
gressively evident. . I wondered
what could- be the relationship be
tween them. Obviously it was
neither social nor intellectual.
Cleaver and Mannix were al
ready ou hand when we were ush
ered into Markham's drawing-room
and a few minutes later Spota
woode arrived. The amenities of
introduction over, we were soon
seated comfortably about the open
'1"B fire, smoking, and sipping very
was having some difficulty in re
conciling the man's appearance
with Vance's sponsorship.
A- tense atmosphero lay beneath
the spurious and affected affabil
ity of the little gathering. Indeed,
tho situation was scarcely condu
cive to spontaneity. Here were
three men each of whom wus
Known 10 me outers to nave dbvh
interested in the same woman;
and the reason for their having
been brought together was tho
faot that this woman hud been
murdered.
Markliam, however, bundled the
situation with such tact that he
largely succeeded In giving each
one the feeling of being a disinter
ested spectator summoned to dis
cuss an abstract problem.
He explained at the outset that
tho "conference" hud been actuat
ed by his failure to find any ap
proach to-the problem of the mur
der. He hoped, , he said, by a
purely informal discussion, divest
ed of all officialism and coercion,
to turn up some suggestion that
liilglit lead to u fiii'.tlui line of In
quiry. His manner was one of
friendly appeal, and when he fin
ished the general tension had been
noticeably relaxed.
During the discussion that fol
lowed I-was interested In tho vari-.
ous attitudes of the men concern-,
ed. Cleaver spoke bitterly .of his.
part In the affair, and was more
self-condemnatory than suggestive.
.. Mannix was voluble and- preten
tiously candid, hut beneath his
! comments ran a strain of apolo
getic -wariness,- ' ' I ' j;
i Spotswoode, unlike Mannix

he did not succeed entirely in hid
ing his resentment at thuB being
dragged into a general discussion.
Vance had little to say limiting
himself to occasional remarks di
rected always to Markhaoi. Allen
did not once speak but sat contem
plating the others with a sort tf
canny amusement.
The entire conversation struck
me as utterly futile. Had Mark
ham really hoped to garner infor
mation from it, he would have
been woefully disappointed. Z real
ized, though, that he was, merely
endeavoring to justify himself for
having' taken so unusual a step,
and to pave the way for the game
of poker which Vauce had request
ed. When the time came to broach
the subject, however, there wub no
difficulty about it.
It was exactly eleven o'aloek
when he made the suggestion. His
tone was gracious and unassum
ing; but by couching his invitation
in terms of a personal request, he
practically precluded declination.
Hut his verbal strategy, I felt,
was . unnecessary, lloth Cleaver
and SpotBwoodo Beemed genuinely
to welcome the opportunity of
dropping a distateful discussion in
favor of playing cardB; and Vance
and Allen, of course, concurred In
stantly.
Mannix alone declined. Ho ex
plained that he knew . the game
only slightly, and disliked it;
though he expressed an enthusias
tic desire to watch . tho others;
j Vance urged him to reconsider, but
wnnoui success; unu AiaiKiiam
finally ordered his man to arrange
the table for five. . .
I noticed that Vance wailed un
til Alien had-taken his phi ce, and
then dropped into the chair at, his
right. Cleaver took the seat at
Allen's left. Spotswoode sat at
Vance's right; and their came
Mnrkham.. Mannix drow un his

and Cleaver. See diagram
.Cleaver first named a rather
moderate limit, but Spotswoode at
once suggested much larger
stakes. Then Vance went Btlll
higher,, and as both Markliam and
Allen signified their - agreement,
his figure was 1 accepted. The
prices 'placed on the chips some
what took my' breath away, and
oven Mannix whistled softly.
That all five men at tho table
were excellent playors became ob
vious before the gaino had' pro
gressed ten mimitos. For the first
time that night Vance's friend Al
len seemed to have found his mi
lieu and to be wholly at ease.
Allen won the first two hands,
and Vance the third and fourth.
Spotswoode then had a Bhort run
of good luck, and a little later
Markbam took a large .jack-pot
.which, put him slightly In the lead.
, -Cleavor was the only loser thus
;far;. but, in anothor half-hour he
had succeeded in receiving a large
portion of his losses. After that
Vance forged- steadily ahead, only
to relinquish his winning Btrenkto

party; for so hlgli were the stukea
and bo rapidly did the betting pyra
mid, that even for men of means-
such as all these players undoubt-
edly were the amounts which con
uuually changed hands represent- j
ed very considerable items. i
Just before one o'clock whea the '
fever of the game bad reached a !
high point, 1 saw Vance glance ;
quickly at Allen- aud pass his :
handkerchief across his forehead.
To a b trail ger the gesture would !
have appeared perfectly natural; I
but, so familiar was i with Vance's
mannerisms, 1 immediately recog
nized Ub artiflclulity. And simul
taneously 1 uotlced that it wus
Allen who was shuffling the cards
preparatory to dealing. Somo
smoke from his elgur evidently
went into his eye at this moment,
for he blinked, und one of the
enrda fell to the floor. Quickly re
trieving it, ho reshuffled the deok
aud placed It before Vance to cut.
The hand was a jack-pot, and
there was a small fortune in chips
already ou the table. Cleaver,
M ink ha m and Spotswoode passed.
The decision thus reached Vance,
aud he opened for an unusuully
large amount. Allen at once laid
down his hand, but Cleaver stay-
ed.
Then r"arkham and Spotswoode
both drovi&d out, leaving the en
tire play between Vance and
Cleaver. Cleaver drow one card.
and Vance, who had opened, drow I
two. Vance - made - a nominal
wager,: and Cleaver ralBed It sub
stantially. Vauce in ' turn mined
Cleaver, cut only- for a small
amount; and Cleaver again raised
Vance this time for an even, larg
er Bum that before. Vance hesitat
ed end called him.- Cleaver ex
posed Ills hand triumphantly.
"Straight flush Jack high," ho
announced. "Can you beat that?"
Not on a two-card draw," said
Vance ruefully. Ho put bib cards
down to show his openers. He had
four kings.
