ISSUE NEW PRAYER BOOK
LONDON, Jan. 20. Tho now
prayer book which has been re
vised by the House of Bishops
since its rejection by Commons,
will be issued tomorrow and con
troversy within the Church of
England will flare anew.
The situation has been compli
cated by the publication yesteruay
of the "Malines conversations"
concerning tho prospect of union
between the Anglican and Roman
Catholic churches. Those will un
doubtedly be used by the evangeli
cal opponents of revision to sup
port their hostility to what they
regard as the tendency of the Anglo-Catholics
toward Rome. Al
tnough the recent papal enclycicai
seemed to nullify the advance oi
tne Anglo Catnoiics' toward unity,
Protestants believe further at
tempts will be made and the posi
tion, as they view It, therefore
remains critical.

THE STORY THUS FAR
It was the jewel case that puz
zled Vance. It was found in the
apartment not far from the stran
gled body of Margaret Odell, the
beautiful stage star known as the
"Canary." The caso looked as if
someone had first tried to open it
with a poker and then had suc
ceeded in opening it wtlh a chisel.
Vance, Markham's friend, and a
student, of -crime -and psychology,
thinks it most peculiar.

His 'specialty was locks and bur

among those exhaustively pains

more accurate reader of the evi

went silently td the window and
began examining It. Vance, whose
iuieiedt seemed suddenly to be ra
awakened, cam oV forward and stood
watching him. 4
For fully fivul minutes the littlo
expert inspect 4 ihe cube, holding
it .within a few J jaches of his my
iic eyes. Then he lifted his
glance to Heath and winked se-ei-ul
times rapidly.
"Two instruments were used ia
opening this cade." His voice was
small and high-pitched, but there
was lu it an uulieniublu quality of
authority. "Ono bent the Hd and
made several fractures on the
baked enamel. The other was, 1
should say, a steel chiBel of some
kind, and was used to break the
iock.
"The first instrument, which
was blunt, was employed amateur
ishly, at the wrong angle of lev
erage; and the effort resulted only
in twisting the overhang of the
lid. But the steel chisel was in
serted wiiu-a knowledge of the
correct point of oscillation, where
a minimum of levuiugo would pro
duce the counteracting stress ne
cessary to Uiaplavo the lock bolt j."
"A professional job?" suggested
Heath.
"Highly so," answered the in
spector, again blinking. "This ia

was one especially constructed tor

"Could this have done the job?"
Heath held out the uoi;er.
The other looked at it closely,
and turned it over several times.
"It might have been tho instru
ment that bent the cover, hut R
was not the one used for prying
open the lock. This poker Is cast
Iron and would have snapped un
der .any great pressure, whereas
this box Is or cold rolled eighteen
gauge steel plate, with an Inset
cylinder pln-lumbler lock taking
paracentric key. The leverage
force uecesary to distort the
flange sufficiently to lift the lid
could have been roude only by a
sieci cnisei.
"Well, that's that." Heath scorn
ed well satisfied with Inspector
Brenner's conclusion. 'Til send
the box down to you, Professor,
and you can le me know what
else you flud out."
"I'll take it along, if vou have
! no objection." And the littlo man
tucked It under his arm and shuf
fled out without another word.
Kealh grinned at Markhum.
"Queer bird. He ain't' happy un

"Markham," he said, "the con
dition of that jewel-case in posi
tively astounding. It's unreason
able .Illogical iusttne. It compU-
tcatea the situation most damnably.
'That steel box simply couldn't
have been chiselled open by a pro
fessional burglar . . . and yer,
don't y' know, it actually was;"
Before M ark h tun could reply, a
satisfied grunt from Captain. Du
bois attracted out attention,
"I've got something for you. Ser
geant," he announced.
We moved expectantly Into ihe
living-room. Dubois was bending
over the end of the library-table
almost directly behind the place
where Margaret Odell'a body had
been found.
He took out an Insufflator,
which was like a very small hand
bellows, and blew a flue light
yellow powder evenly over about a
e qua re foot of the poliBliod rose
wood surface of the table lop.
Then he gently blew away the sur
plus powder, and there appeared
the Impression of a human hand
distinctly registered in saffron.
The bulb of tho thumb and each
i fleshy hummock between the
joints' of tho fingers and around
,the palm stood out Hko tiny clr
' cular Islands. All the papillary
; ridges were clonrly discernible.
The photographer then hooKeu uis
camera to a peculiar adjustably
tripod and, carefully focusing hta
lens, took two flash-light pictures
of tho hand-mark.
"This ought to do," Dubois w.is
pleased wiih his find. "It's tho
right hand a clear print and the
guy who made it was standing
ritmt behind tho dame. . . . And
fit's the newest print In tho plnce."
t "What about this box?" Heath
i pointed to ihe black document-box
ion tho table near the overturned
lamp.
"Not a mark wiped cltfan."
Dubois begun putting away his
paraphernalia.
"I Bay, Captain Dubois," intor
"od Vance, " did you take a good
look at tho Inside door-knob vt
that clothes-press?"
The man swung about, abruptly,
and gave Vnnco a glowering look.
"ppmilo ain't In the habit of
bundling tho Inside knobs of closet
! doors. They open and shut closets
from the outside.
Vance raised his eyebrows In
simulated astonishment.
"Do they, now, really? Fancy
that! . . . Still, don't y know. If
one were Inside the clo3('t, one
couldn't reach the outside Unou."
"The people I know don't shut
themselves In clothes-closets." Du
bois's tone was ponderously sar
enstic. "You positively nmnzo me!"' de
clared Vance. "All tho people 1
know are addicted to the habit a
sort of daily pastime, don't y'
know."
' Markham, always diplomatic, In
tervened. I. "What idea havo you about that

Heath was not entirely free from
the same vague misgivings that
were disturbing Vance, for he
turned to Dubois and said:
"Vou might go over the knob.
Captain. -As this gentleman says,
there's something funny about th
condition of that closet."
Dubois, silent and surly, went to
the closet door and sprayed his
yellow powder over the inside
knob. When he had blown the
loose particles away, he bent over
it with his magnifying-glass. At
leugth he straightened up, and
gave Vance a look of Ill-natured
appraisal.
"There's fresh prints on It, all
right," he grudgingly admitted ;
"and unless 1 m mistaken they
were made by the samo hand as
those on tho table. Both thumb
marks are ulnar loops, and the Index-fingers
nre both whorl pat
terns. ... Here, I'ete," he order
ed tho photographer, "make some
shots of that knob."
When this had boon done, Du
bois. Bellamy, and the photograph
or loft us.
A few moments later, after an
Interchange of pleasantries. In
spector Moran also departed. At
tho door he passed two men in
white uniform of Internes, who had
come to take away the girl's body.
