MOVING MOUNTAINS
To widen your horizon it is best to go up on a niountiiin
If von ain't do that, however, it will serve just ns well if
vou can level the hills and mountain peaks that surround
your valley. The mountain peak Is better, but the alterna
tive is very Rood, It is this second plan Unit we may say
American civilization is now nltomptinjr. The ordinary man
of n century ao had n very limited horizon. He was, in a
way, sunk in a valley of iirnoraneo and unhappiness. The
fears, the superstititions, the physical limitations and the
economic boundaries that hemmed him in were much the
same ns those that had cramped the spirit of his remote cave
man Ancestor. There had been some progress, but it had
been minute and painful. TIumi, began that nmii.iii(r series
of Inventions, discoveries and adaptations that brought
libout thu industrial revolution and the ago of science. The
old confining hills were cut away. Things that obscured
the vision of man a century ago now sunk below tho hori
zon. A long list of new forces wore placed at the service of
llm riimmiiii man. Science killed old superstitions, found
new ways of healing tho Bick, arranged in a thousand ways
to mako man's life easier and moro pleasant. The old guild
worker vanished before the modern factory, with the result
that tilings which formerly would have been tho exclusive
privilege of the wealthy became the matter-of-fact necessity
of the average man. IJecauso of all of this, even the poor
est man today has, in many ways, a bolter lifo than tho rich
man of a hundred years ago. All of this, wo may say, con
stitutes a levelling of tho hills, tho horizon of each one of
us was vastly increased. Today there are certain evidences
that wo need now to take another step; we need to ascend
tho mountain peaks. Wo havo our great scientific and in
dustrial achievements, and they havo given us a broader
outlook than was possible to our grandfathers. Yet, seem
ingly, wo have not yet learned how to use them. Material
ly wo have gone far, indeed; but still we lack the complete
vision that will tell us how to use these new servants of
ours to tho best advantage. In others words, wo must ad
vance spiritually and mentally as much as we have advanced
nhvslenlly. We must adjust our minds and our spirits to
the i.ew day. We must broaden our horizons now, not by
removing any extraneous limitations, but by raising our-
wives to a point where wo can look beyond those things that
mm never he moved those irroat facts liko death and love
and loneliness and spiritual hunger and see more clearly
tho way wo are to go.
o
Ilignoss is the watchword in this country, and there
doesn't seem to be any getting around it. Edward A. Fileno,
lloston luYiohant, and a close student of American econ
omic conditions, reveals that in 1925, the last year for which
complete figures are available, f2 per cent of the total pro
fits earned by U. S. business were made by one-fifth of
one nor cent of the i. umber of corporations. In addition,
- only one-fiftieth of one per cent of the corporations in
America made -15 per cent of all tho profits in their parti
cular branches of industry. The moral? Here's what Mr.
Fileno remarks: "Tho lion's share of the profits is going
to the large, scientifically organized business." Uignoss
that's America, all over.
o
We sincerely hope, when the time arrives to let the
contract on the new court house for this county, that the
work, so far as possible, bo given to local contractors. Al
ready agitation along this line is beginning to percolate
and the people do not want a repetition of the recent bridge
contract let by the city. Officials should at all times pro
tect home imprests. It is the proper manner to build your
community in substantial way. Why let contracts to out
side people who have no interest whatever in our weltaro.
It's the bunk, and a losing practice that should be discon
tinued. Other progressive communities are following this
example v here bids for county work are near equal to those
of outside competitors.
