View eu In retrospect, the year 1827 stands out as one of the most satisfactory in Buick history, In he opinion of Buick Motor company officials. Be sides building the 2,000,000th Buick anU thereby shattering all records for the manufacture of fine motor cars, Buick brought out a line of new models which has received publio endorsement un- paralleled in Buick history. This year also saw, expansion steps which leave Buick better equipped than ever, from the factory stand- pojui. The 2,000,000th, Buick was built early in November, heavy sale of sion, started during 1927 and now the 1928 models advancing the inearlng completion, is the engine date of Its production consider- erlng and research building where ably. These new models introduc-1 all work of this sort will focus, ed to the public in late July, at- leaving various parts of the fac- tracted l,52b,152 persons to Bulc sales rooms during the first three days o( ila display, in the larger cities were attendance was cheok- ed. The sale or the new models was so sustained that Buick rin ished the year with a new produc tion record of approximately 2.50, 000 cars. The 2,000,000th Buick, a five passenger coupe, is being exhibit ed by Buick In connection with the national automobile shows. It was on display at the New York Buick branch, Broadway and fifty fifth street, during the' New York show, and Chicago also will see It. Tho contrast between this lux urious creation In maroon Duco. shining nickel and rich upholstery, and the Bulcks of 1904, Buick's first production year, is vast, The 2,000,000th Buick is scarcely recognizable as one of the same genus as these early motor cars so great has been the advance in engineering, body building, and all else connected with automobiles, Figures kept by the -'Buick or ganizatlon lndicatos .that 1,500,000 nt the 2.000,000 Bulcks still are in active service today. Many date back fifteen or -more years. An IS year-old Buick touring car crossed the continent from San Saba, Texas, to Flint, last -summer, 'and returned, making the trip without trouble of any kind. A hugo program of expansion, necessitated by demand for Bulcks and the desire to extend super vision over the product's quality, ' completed during ' the yeur wh(-h saw the 2.000,000th Buick built. The various parts feed to I l hi triple line over conveyors of j 'various sorts, each coming from i lha nlant which tnnda it Tha ra- ! pacity of th line is about 1,200 cars a day. It requires just 75 minutes to transform a bare I frame Into a finished Buick. I In September, 1927, the new gray Iron foundry, built at a cost of $5,500,000, was put Into produc tion. It is unique among the world's foundries in that progres sive methods, like those devised for the assembly line, obtain throughout. Materials, flasks, hot metal, all move on conveyors, o which there are 367 of various types. The six Winch cupolas bave a combined capacity or of ilQ tons of metal a day, so that to ! new foundry, Id conjunction with 'the old foundry, is adequate to Buick's entire gray iron casting re- qulrements. Still another unit in tha exDan- itory, now devoted to engineering work, free for production pur poses. vWo are all Bet," said Cady B. Durham, vice president in charge of production, "to go out this year and break our ova rec ord." MOVIES ANTLERS THEATRE "Underworld" Theme One Should Interest Fans! The underworld is Its own worst enemy. 1 Statistics show that more thugs are killed by other gangsters than .are ever shot by police or pu,t to death by law. I The crime code of revenge is (dramatically shown in Ben Hecht's powerful drama "Underworld," f now showing at the Antlers, which t was directed by Josef von Stern i berg under Hector Turnbull's su pervislon for Paramount. Fred Kohler, gangster, and killed by Qeorgo. ts shot VOtacroft, rival gang leader, to avenge the former's attentions to Evelyn Brent. Gang killings and battles with the police are vividly por trayed. Production of this car makes Buick unique among manufac turers of high-grade automobile. The car, a five-pasaenger coupe, la ..cing displayed in connecting with the National Automobile Shows. Tl BY E. E. DUFFY In the good old days, of say ten years ago, it was customary fit about this time of year or earlier, to jack up the automobile, remove the battery, and perchance, re move the water from the radiator. The car was retired for the win ter; its utility was cut in half. Nowadays it Is a rather remote ly located motorist who is requir ed to perform this said ritual. The general improvement la rural highways has made it possible and highly desirable that time wast Ing and travel prohibiting- 6 now be removed from the roadway. Southern states, although never blanketed with snow, also have their winter worries. Iacessant rains convert dirt and gruvel roads into impassable, -bottomless trails.- In many communities the isolation imposed by mud roads is as complete as though produc led by several feet of snow. Here again tho solution lies m the con struction of years round pave ments. In the earlier days of the auto mobile snow removal, except in few Instances, was impractical be cause of the roughened condition, of the roads underneath the white blauket. A horse drawn snow i nlow could cover only a few miles daily. But with the coming of graded roods and hard pavements, I along with the development of STUDY the new features offered in the New Series I'ontiac Six! Seldom has a more impressive list . been offered in a single announcement on any car whose past record proved it to be of sound design. And they have been added without increasing the price because Pontiac's past success makes possible this added value! These new features assure smoother, snappier, more powerful six-cylinder per formance greater safety and comfort greater luxury and owner satisfaction. They give added value the greatest ever offered in a low-priced six! Come in to-day and see for yourself. COUPE... A Saga of the Snow Plow could well be written. , A few years ago an. ambitious machinery company in Milwaukee j volunteered to show road authori ties In Wisconsin what could be done In the way of econopiical snow removal. The tractor bur rowed its way through 270 mile of snow of an. average depth of at foot and a half, and of not inirc- quent drift depths of four feet, all in a few days. Today most Wis consin- counties are able to main tain long distance travel through out the year, with about 120 units of equipment in service. Snow removal is a problem ef fecting the entire northern belt, in some Instances extending down into the second and third tier of states. Rural roads should be con sidered as a definite state or coun ty money-prpduclng facility, for money saved is money earned, i Consequently when those roads' are idle they become decidedly non-productive. And unfortunate ly, rural earning power Is dimin ished and city trade falls off. A great deal still remains to be done. Pavements must be extend ed, both in the north and the south, so that every populous com munity will be within easy travel ing distance of a hard road. Pave ments make it possible for tho community to function the year round at full blast. - Myers barrel spray outfits are in expensive and go good work.
