Self Sung Requiem
WASHINGTON, Dec. '21. (J
i Knowledge that he courted the
death which may now be his with
in the steel confines of the
1 wrecked submarine S-4, was held
by Walter Bishop of Washington,
: radioman aboard her, hut, like his
. comrades In peril, he was fasclnat
, ed by "life in a. damued old sub."
j Prophetic in its recital of tKe
dangers braved aboard a "pig
bout'' a poem written some tunc
two by Bishop has come to light as
a self-sung requiem over those who
went to their death with the S-4 off
Provincetown.. Entitled "The Sub
marine," the poem fits particular
ly well Into the story of the S-4
with lis description of the close
quarters of an undersea boat.
Opening with the observation
that many "rave of battleships,
Spotless and clean," hut that not
much Is said of "life on a subma
rine," the poem continued:
In the cantankerous mind of (ho
: devil rjr.
7'ht'ro, festorod a. fiendish
scheme; i;
Ho called hi3 cohorts around him
And designed the submarine, ii .
They planned and plotted to do
their worst, .
In perfecting this awful thing; j
And since completing their hideous;
work i
Are waiting what evil It will
, bring. . i
The after battery is where wo
eat
That is, when we roll the least
Wtiile hanging on to keep our
place - t
Likq some prehensile beast.
Most of us In the battery room I
Are close to a lurking death; -
With the storage cells giving off
gas ' '
That Bmothers our every breath.
The torpedo room is a deadly spot,
But wo have Biuall choice, you
know;
So some sleep there, knext the over
head. With tons of T N T below. .
The coc is a little place
Just crammed with levers and
tools,
And let me tell you, on a dive'
It Is uo place for fools.

Attends this job of ours,
That could only be duplicated

But the blamed old life will drag

And there, friends, is the rub;
