able opportunity for an inquiry on
the basis of his health into the pos
sibility of his release from serving
the remainder of his enlistment, it
was learned todny from an un-
qunestionnhle source.
Doty, who enlisted as Gilbert
Claro of Memphis, Tenn., deserted
in Syria, was arrested and later
pardoned after serving part of his
eight year sentence for desertion,
is now serving out the remainder
of his enlistment in Algeria.

Portland Chamber of Commerce
has been Invited to send a repre
sentative to Chicago in December
to attend the Chicago session ot
the series of grain rate hearings
being held by the Interstate Com
merce Commission, according to
Information received by the state
public service commission. A mem
ber of the statu commission also
will attend. Two hearings will be
hehl on the Pacific coast early In
the year, and the Oregon commis
sion hopes to have one of them
set for Portland.

Consolidated schools of Smith
River have been closed down for
a period of two weeks as n guard
ugainst Infantile paralyse, accord
ing tb the report made from the
school board of that district. The i
move came as a result of the visit
of one of the teachers and one of I
the pupils to Eugene during the
Armistice day football game.
Due to the fact that. Eugene has
reported several cases of infantile
paralysis and has closed one of the
high schools the directors of the
local schools decided to close the
schools for a period of two weeks.
At a mass meeting held last
Monday at the school building, a
decision was reached which ruled;
that all children must remain In
the community and not visit else-i
where.
