years. In addition to making up
all their losses from death, remov
al and other causes, the churches
have made a net increase ln mem
bership of 46.4 per cent in twenty
years. . . -, , i
"During these same twenty years,
the increase in population of rthe
country was 36.5. -The churches, in
other words, gained in membership
much faster than the population.
"It is true that when the so-called
war decade (1916-1926) is taken
alone the figures are not so encour
aging. tFor these ten -years, :the
gain tin church membership was
16.2 per cent, while the gain in
population was 16.3 per cent. This
condition may perhaps be explained
by the diversion of - the 'Church's
energies during the war years. Dur
ing the last halt of the - decade,
however,' a recovery has been tak
ing place." . . f

races with Norwegian,
